Bears Fall to Wildcats After Last-Minute Goal
10/21/2022 9:47:00 PM | Women's Soccer
OGDEN, Utah- UNC Soccer played an even match with the Weber State Wildcats on Sunday night that was marked by strong goalkeeping and remained a scoreless deadlock for the majority of regulation. However, a last-minute goal from WSU was enough to end the match in a 1-0 loss.
UNC and WSU spent much of the first half in a back-and-forth battle at midfield, however both teams managed to create some chances. The Bears recorded two shots in the half, however the story of the game was goalkeeper Kaya Lindberg's performance.
Lindberg tabbed three saves in the first half to remain perfect between the posts and hold off the Wildcats. She showcased her grit by winning a foot race for the ball that ended in a collision, but played a key role in keeping her team out of danger and the game even at 0-0 going into half time.
The second half saw an increased pace in competition and more offensive effort from the Bears, who recorded five additional shots in the half. Samantha Blanchard, Kalen Niedling, and Lauren Woodhull each created some good scoring chances but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.
Blanchard and Maddie Duren also stepped up with some impressive defensive plays to keep Weber State off the board. However, the Wildcats brought increased pressure on goal with a relentless flood of shots in the last ten minutes of the game. Lindberg once again stepped up, recording two more saves.
But in the 86th minute of the game, this pressure paid off and the Wildcats were able to score on a corner kick to take the lead late. Northern Colorado showed no stop as they fought diligently to secure a stalemate, but to no avail, ending in a 1-0 loss.
What They Said
"We played pretty well, just didn't get enough chances again," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "We couldn't clear a corner kick. Another tough one, but we'll see how we do on Sunday."
