Softball's eyes set on Idaho State this weekend

UNC softball concludes the regular season against Idaho State
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado softball enters the final week of the regular season with momentum after sweeping Southern Utah last weekend. The Bears travel to Idaho State for a three-game series May 7 and 8.
Leading Off
• Northern Colorado swept Southern Utah to close out the home portion of their schedule last week.
• UNC now controls its destiny for the No. 2 seed in the Big Sky Tournament with three wins this weekend.
• Northern Colorado qualified for its third straight Big Sky Tournament. It will take place next week in Ogden, Utah
• UNC swept the Big Sky weekly honors with Mady Young earning Player of the Week and Erin Caviness the Pitcher of the Week award.
• Erin Caviness was fanning Thunderbirds left and right last weekend. She struck out 15 SUU batters over 16.0 innings of work. Caviness went 2-0 with a save posting a 0.88 ERA and holding Southern Utah to a .179 batting average.
• Mady Young hit .500 for the weekend going 4-for-8 with three extra base hits. She homered in the first game and had a pair of doubles in the series finale. Young walked once and scored four times.
• Alyssa Wenzel had a team-best .556 batting average over the weekend going 5-for-9 at the plate. She had a double and scored once.
• Idaho State won its first conference series of the year traveling to Sacramento State taking two of the three games.
• Northern Colorado holds a narrow 26-23 record against Idaho State.
Scouting Idaho State
Idaho State picked up its first series win of the year by taking two of three from Sacramento State last weekend. The Bengals are continuing to rebuild under head coach Cristal Brown coming into the weekend 9-27 overall and 3-12 in the Big Sky.
Mailee Newman leads the team hitting .348 on the year. The Bengals big bat comes from Angelica Cano with seven home runs and Emily Bordenkecher isn't far behind with six.
ISU has struggled in the circle this year with a team ERA of 9.65. Opponents are hitting .364 against them in 2021.
What's Ahead
It's postseason time. Northern Colorado heads to Ogden, Utah for the six-team, double-elimination tournament May 13-15.
