Erin Caviness threw a complete game shutout to sweep Southern Utah
GREELEY, Colo. – Erin Caviness was untouchable this weekend. She pitched a complete game shutout on Saturday as the Bears swept Southern Utah with the 4-0 win.
Caviness struck out five Thunderbirds on the day, 15 for the weekend going 2-0, and picked up the save in game two yesterday.
Mady Young wasted no time getting the Bears offense going on her Senior Day roping a ball over the right fielder's head to the wall for a double. Smart base running led her to score before the inning ended. Advancing on a groundout to third she scored on a delayed steal.
Emma Brockmann broke for second and stayed in the pickle long enough to allow Young to cross the plate making it 1-0 UNC after one.
The lead extended to 2-0 in the second. Alison Steinker reached on an error by Southern Utah's third baseman to lead off the inning. Anna Martinez pinch ran for her and came home the next at-bat when Natalie Joyner's sacrifice bunt attempt turned into another error, this time from the pitcher.
The throwing error turned into a three-base error with Joyner standing on third and Martinez scoring.
Young and Brockmann made the most of their last at-bats at Gloria Rodriguez Field helping the team add on two insurance runs in the sixth.
Young hit her second double of the day this one down the line in right to get the rally started. Two batters later, Brockmann sent a sharp single through the left side scoring Young. Fellow senior Natalie Joyner brought home the second run of the inning with an infield single scoring Dani Young.
Caviness ended the game with her fifth three up, three down inning of the day.
Game Notes
- Mady Young was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored on her Senior Day. Both hits were doubles and she also walked. Young now has a nine-game hit streak.

- For the second straight day Caviness and the Bears held SUU to just five hits.
- UNC ends the 2021 home schedule on a six-game win streak.
