UNC men finish ninth, women 10th at Big Sky Championships

MISSOULA, Mont. – Northern Colorado track & field closed out the Big Sky Championship on Saturday, with five All-Big Sky performances, including the men's 4x100 relay team winning. On Championship Saturday, UNC set three PRs and tied another while also having five medalists. As a team, the men finished in ninth and women in 10th place.

The quartet Demetrius Graves, Greg Laday, Deondre Ritter and Kyle Thomas helped start the running events in exciting fashion by crossing the line in 40.46 seconds, the best of the season for the Bears 4x100 team.

While the 4x100 team was the lone first place finish for the team. Cammy Sargent (800m), Kyle Thomas (400m), Antoine Coates (200m) and the men's 4x400 team all medaled for the team. Sargent finished second in the 800m with a time of 2:08.84. Thomas, Coates and the 4x400 team all finished in third place.

After winning his prelims heat yesterday, Thomas ran the 400m dash in a time of 47.02. Like Thomas, Coates also won his prelim heat on Friday in the 200m. In the finals, he crossed the finish line in 21.63 seconds.

Both Thomas and Coates were on the 4x400 relay team that took third, along with teammates Alex Ayers and Adam Stark. They finished the race in 3:11.16 behind Montana and Southern Utah.

The triple jump was the best field event of the day for Northern Colorado as both the men and women had two athletes earn points for the team in it. On the men's side, senior Jakeob Tagita took fourth with a mark of 14.71m (48' 3 ¼"). Teammate Tyler Thimsen set a new PR and finished sixth with a leap of 14.51m (47' 7 ¼").

On the women's side, Ashley Register and Kylie Chavez took sixth and seventh, respectively. Register edged out her teammate by 0.01m with a jump of 11.74m (38' 6 ¼") to Chavez's 11.73m (38' 6").

What's ahead
Northern Colorado will now wait and see who qualifies for the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, Calif. The Bears sent a pair of runners to it last season in Alex Wesley for the 400m and Cammy Sargent for the 800m.
