PORTLAND, Ore. – After a long day of multiple game times, the Northern Colorado softball team finally took the field against Portland State, carrying over the hot bats from last weekend.
UNC jumped out to an early lead in the first inning putting the pressure on the Vikings.
"We came out strong and had some good quality at bats especially early in the game," said head coach Shana Easley. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to sustain it for 7 innings. We had our chances but weren't able to capitalize. Luckily we have 2 games tomorrow to come out and capture a road series win."
Erica Dick helped the Bears in the first, homering to center field. It was her fourth of the year and her third in the last four games.
Melissa Marcovecchio followed the homerun with a long ball of her own to center field, her fourth on the season also, giving UNC a quick 2-0 lead.
Marcovecchio was right back at work in the next inning, rocketing a single to centerfield scoring Nicole Hudson on the play.
The Bears led 3-0 after two innings.
Jayme Reddacliff found her groove from the circle recording two strikeouts in the first and second innings before giving up a run in the third to the Vikings making it a 3-1 game in favor of UNC.
Both pitchers dialed in for their respected clubs over next two innings letting up no runs.
In the sixth inning, PSU grinded out a run bringing the score to 3-2 with one inning to go.
Portland State threw on its rally caps in the seventh inning and they worked, picking up two runs in the bottom half of the frame for the victory.
Brittany Hendrickson worked the count for a walk in the seventh with only one out.
Mackenzie Bourbanis pinch ran for Hendrickson and advanced to second off a Aubrey Nitschelm single to right field.
Alex Flores became the hero for the Vikings, doubling to left field scoring both Bourbanis and Nitschelm, handing Northern Colorado a, 4-3 loss.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow in an unusual Saturday double header with games being played at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
