Kenny Records His First HR of the Season

OMAHA, Neb. – Craig Kenny, Tony Castonguay and Brandon Sanchez accounted for 12 hits in 24 at-bats, including five doubles and a home run against Omaha (7-17, 2-6) at Tal Anderson Field Friday.

The Bears (8-17, 3-5) banged out 11 extra-base hits but dropped both ends of the doubleheader 11-9 and 14-10.

Castonguay went 4-for-8 at the dish, including four doubles, with three runs and four RBIs. Kenny scored three and drove in one, with three singles and his first home run of the season in eight at-bats. Sanchez scored three runs, with a run-batted-in, recording three singles and a double.

Aiden Gebhard, Hunter Gibson and Mason Bright shined on the mound for UNC. The trio allowed three runs on five hits and one walk, with nine strikeouts in 7.1 innings of relief.

Gebhard tossed three scoreless frames, punching out three and scattering three hits. Gibson fanned three and surrendered one run in two frames. Bright allowed two runs, one hit and two free passes. He recorded three of his seven outs by a strikeout.

Northern Colorado struck early, with four runs in the first inning of game one but gave up three in the home half of the frame. The Mavericks tallied solo tallies in each of the next four innings, building leads of 6-4 and 7-5. UNC moved in front at 9-7, with one in the sixth and two runs in the eighth by Omaha knotted the game at 9-9. The Mavericks walked it off with two more in the bottom of the ninth.

In game two, Omaha jumped out to a 13-1 cushion, after three stanzas, with six in the first and five in the third. UNC sliced the deficit to 13-8, with six runs in the top of the fourth and a solo marker in the fifth. The Mavericks scratched across one in the sixth and the Bears recorded a pair in the seventh for the final margin.
