Mooser Drives in a Pair
OMAHA, Neb. – Dylan Smith slammed the door shut out of the Northern Colorado (8-18, 3-6) bullpen in the series finale against Omaha (8-17, 3-6) at Tal Anderson Field Saturday.
Smith tossed 4.1 innings of relief, scattering four hits and walking two, with three strikeouts.
At the plate, Ethan Mooser paced the offense with two of the Bears eight hits and accounted for two of the three RBIs. James Wright went 2-for-4, while Brett Barber, Jake King, Craig Kenny and Brandon Sanchez inked a knock each.
UNC built a 4-0 advantage in the second on three hits and an RBI base-on-balls by Sanchez.
The first three Bears reached to load the bags. Sanchez worked a one-out walk, scoring King, who opened the inning with a free pass. Mooser followed with a single through the right side of the infield, plating Wright and Kenny. With two outs, Sanchez scampered home on a wild pitch.
Omaha responded with three in the home half of the frame and knotted the game with a solo marker in the next stanza.
Keaton Fisher pushed UNC in front in the sixth when he scored on a wild pitch.
Smith suffered the loss after the Mavericks plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth. Omaha capitalized on two miscues by the defense for their second walk-off win of the series.
The Mavericks leadoff batter reached on an error in the ninth but a pop-up and a caught stealing pushed Omaha to its final out. A single and second miscue allowed runners to reach first and second. A single evened the score at 5-5 and an intentional pass to the next hitter loaded the bases. Smith's 3-2 offering missed the inside corner and Omaha completed the weekend sweep.
