Northern Colorado drops games to Nebraska and New Mexico State, looks ahead to El Paso tournament
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Northern Colorado closed out play at the NM State Softball Complex with a pair of tough losses, falling 10-0 to No. 17 Nebraska before dropping a close 3-2 battle to New Mexico State.
GAME 1 | NEBRASKA 10, NORTHERN COLORADO 0
Pitching: (W) J. Bahl (3-1); (L) G. Algrim (0-1)
Northern Colorado's offense struggled against Nebraska's dominant pitching, as the Bears were no-hit in a five-inning contest. Nebraska used a relentless offensive attack, scoring in three consecutive innings to secure the run-rule victory.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Huskers broke through in the third with three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Ava Bredwell. Nebraska continued to add on in the fourth, using timely hitting and an error to plate three more runs. The game was put out of reach in the fifth, as Samantha Bland and Lauren Camenzind both delivered key hits in a four-run frame.
Jordyn Bahl delivered a dominant performance in the circle for Nebraska, striking out five while allowing just four baserunners on walks and hit-by-pitches. The Bears best scoring chance came in the second inning when they put two on base, but a groundout ended the threat.
GAME 2 | NEW MEXICO STATE 3, NORTHERN COLORADO 2
Pitching: (W) F. Aragon (2-1); (L) A. Wilming (1-4)
Northern Colorado struck early with a two-run first inning as Katie Walling doubled home a run and Sabrina Javorsky followed with an RBI groundout.
New Mexico State responded immediately, tying the game in the bottom half on back-to-back home runs from Faith Aragon and Desirae Spearman. The Aggies took the lead in the third with a solo home run from Kristiana Watson, which proved to be the difference.
The Bears threatened late with a leadoff single from Abby Gaona in the seventh, but NM State's defense held firm to seal the win.
Walling led the Bears, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Anna Wilming went the distance in the circle, allowing three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.
With the losses, Northern Colorado falls to 2-6 on the season.
