Bears Split DH at Portland State

PORTLAND, Ore. – Northern Colorado split Friday's doubleheader against Portland State at Hillsboro Stadium Saturday.
The Bears (23-22, 8-5 Big Sky) earned a 9-5 victory in the opener, before falling to the Vikings (19-21, 8-5) 1-0 in the nightcap.
UNC built a 7-1 lead in the third inning of game one. After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, they tallied four in the second and three in the third.
In the second, Quinn Myers-Lenz and Strathern delivered RBI singles, pushing UNC 2-1. Amailee Morales doubled the Bears' total by driving in two with a knock to left field.
Myers-Lenz drove in her second run of the game in the third. Two batters later, Morales tallied her third and fourth RBIs of the game, with a double to left center.
The Vikings matched the three runs posted by the Bears in the top of the third, with three in the home half of the frame, cutting the margin back to three.
Morales plated Myers-Lenz with a sacrifice fly and Ella Gonzales singled home a second marker in the sixth and pushed the margin up to 9-4.
Portland State pushed across one in the sixth, for the final tally of the contest.
Erin Caviness earned the victory, improving to 14-6 on the campaign.
Portland State scored a solo tally in the first inning of the nightcap and shut out the Bears.
The two teams sit tied atop the Big Sky Conference with one day remaining in conference play. The winner of the rubber game of the series claims the regular season title if Idaho State defeats Weber State Saturday.
Game two of the series between the Bengals and Wildcats was suspended in the ninth inning tied at 6-all. The teams will complete the contest and conclude the series with the finale approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended contest.
