PORTLAND, Ore. – Erin Caviness and Nya Chacon powered Northern Colorado to a 4-0 victory and series triumph over Portland State at Gordon Faber Field 4 Saturday.
Chacon blasted a three-run home run – part of a four-run first inning for the Bears and Caviness tossed a complete-game shutout.
Caviness improved to 15-7 in the circle this season, tossing her 17th-complete game this season, including eight shutouts. She allowed no walks and scattered four hits while punching out seven.
Amailee Morales opened the scoring with a double to center, scoring Lauren Strathearn, who led off the game with a single. Following a pair of outs, Alison Steinker worked a five-pitch walk, putting two runners on for Chacon.
The Vikings loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but Caviness slammed the door shut with a strikeout. In the sixth, she worked around a lead-off double, retiring three Vikings in order.
UNC finished Big Sky play at 9-5 but must wait until Sunday to see if the Bears clinched the regular season title.
If Idaho State wins one of the final two games in its three-game series with Weber State Sunday, the Bears win the regular season championship and the number one seed at the conference championship. Weber State must sweep the final two contests to earn the top seed and regular-season title.
The middle game of the series was suspended Friday evening in Pocatello, Idaho, knotted at 6-6 in the ninth inning. The finale gets underway approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended contest.
