Bears Topped by Hornets on the Road

SACRAMENTO, Calif.- Despite a strong second half effort, an early goal from Sacramento State was too much for Northern Colorado to come back from resulting in a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears had a slow start to the first half, with the Hornets controlling the ball for the majority of the first 45 minutes in the California heat. Goalkeeper Kaya Lindberg faced pressure in goal early in the half, resulting in a Sacramento State goal in the fourth minute of the game that put UNC at an early deficit.
UNC spent much of the half on their own end of the pitch, where Lindberg tabbed a total of three saves. Their best chance to get on the board in the first came on a free kick from Morgan King just outside the Hornet's box, however the shot was unable to make it past the defenders, keeping the Bears down 1-0 at halftime.
In the final 45 minutes of regulation, Northern Colorado came back strong and increased their pressure on the Hornets, created multiple solid scoring chances, narrowed the shot advantage, and spent notable time in their opponents' zone.
The Bears recorded 11 shots in the second half in pursuit of a game equalizing goal, four of which were on goal. One of the best chances for the team to tie the game came on a corner kick from Hailey Collier into the box where Britney Donais headed the ball just high of the goal.
UNC fought hard until the final buzzer, but were ultimately unable to score, ending the match with a 1-0 loss.
What They Said
"A tough day, where we gave up an early goal and had to chase the rest of the game. But I'm proud of how the players kept at it and created a lot more scoring chances, with 11 shots in the second half," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "We got going a bit, but just couldn't find the equalizer. It was a warm day, but the players fought through it, and it was a good back and forth game."
