CEDAR CITY, Utah- First, second, and third time's the charm.
UNC Softball secured the series sweep over Southern Utah in a 4-3 nail bitter on Saturday to conclude its first week of Big Sky play.
Â
Following up a doubleheader the day before where both the Bears' offense and defense were firing on all cylinders and earned dominant wins, Saturday was a different story. The third game of the series was largely a hard-fought defensive effort for the team.
Â
UNC wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in just the fourth at-bat of the game. This was courtesy of a two-RBI single from sophomore Alexsi Barashkoff that brought both Jaycie Gandert and Riley Plogger home for the early lead.
Â
The team extended its advantage in the third inning with a double to right field from Peyton Gale to score Kaileigh Holland. Alyssa Wenzel quickly followed with a sacrifice fly to add another run from Barashkoff to lead the Thunderbirds by four.
Â
However, SUU was quick to answer in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to two and following it up with tough pitching.
Â
It was freshman pitcher Isabelle DiNapoli, though, who stole the show for Northern Colorado and carried the team through four scoreless innings. At the bottom of the fourth, she struck out the side and had all kinds of momentum.
Â
The young righty earned her a career-best for most strikeouts in a single game, beating her previous record by five, tabbing a total of 13 on the day.
Â
The Thunderbirds attempted a comeback late in the seventh inning adding another run but were unable to power past the Bears' solid defense thanks to a caught fly to right field and a strong performance from DiNapoli that clinched the series sweep in UNC's favor.
Â
Game Notes
- This win marks DiNapoli's fourth full game victory of the season.
- Four different players hit a team total of five doubles.
- Plogger hit the sole triple of the game and also accounted for a double.
- Barashkoff led the team in hits going 3-for-4 at the plate and earning two RBI.
Â
What's Ahead
The Bears now return home to host a doubleheader against Colorado Mines at Gloria Rodriguez Field on Wednesday starting at 3 pm.
