CEDAR CITY, Utah- UNC Softball swept Southern Utah in dominant fashion, run ruling the Thunderbirds in both games on Friday in their Big Sky opener. The team secured wins in both games, 10-0 and 10-2, respectively.
Â
The Bears were on fire both offensively and defensively on Friday in Cedar City. They came out hot, scoring in the first inning to set the tone for game one. Senior Carson Fischer followed up with a solo home run in the second to give the Bears an even larger lead, also giving her the only home run of the day.
Â
The next two innings were scoreless as freshman pitcher Meghan Golden held off the Thunderbirds to retain the lead. But game one was overall defined by a red hot fifth inning that brought a scoring boom, consisting of eight runs for the Bears.
Â
In the top of the fifth, Kaileigh Holland and Fischer both hit singles that resulted in two RBI each, accounting for half of the runs earned in the inning that cemented the shutout for the Bears.
Â
The second game of the day also brought the second run-rule victory for the team. Once again, UNC got on the board right off the bat, scoring twice in the first inning.
Â
The third inning, though, is where the team hit their stride, accounting for six runs. Paola Villegas' hitting earned her two RBI. A triple from junior Jaycie Gandert also sent two of her teammates home as well.
Â
The Thunderbirds went on to score twice in the bottom of the third, but that was all they were able to manage thanks to a great defensive effort by Erin Caviness and company.
Â
Northern Colorado went on to score once more in the fourth. However, it was Gandert's run off of a hit from Riley Plogger that put UNC in a run-rule position in the top of the fifth. Isabelle Dinapoli then secured the victory by striking out three batters straight to keep the game from going any extra innings.
Â

- Golden tabbed eight strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader, earning her seventh win.
