Meghan Golden struck out 15 batters Saturday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Freshman Meghan Golden set a program record Saturday striking out 15 batters in her complete game win. The Peoria, Arizona native shutdown the Incarnate Word bats in the 6-1 win.
Golden's 15 strikeouts break the previous record of 12 by Jayme Reddacliff in 2016 against Texas Southern. Golden's final line on the game was 7.0 innings pitched, allowing just one run on three hits while fanning 15 and walking two.
Before Golden even stepped in the circle on Saturday, she and UNC had a lead. The Bears wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Jaycie Gandert walked in the second at-bat of the game and graduate transfer Kaileigh Holland hit her fourth home run of the year to make it a 2-0 game.
UIW put the only blemish on Golden's record day with a solo home run in the bottom of the first.
Northern Colorado seized control of the game with a four-run third inning.
The big inning started with a Gandert double to left center. She scored the very next at-bat advancing on a wild pitch and scoring on a passed ball, ball four for Holland. UNC proceeded to load the bases after that.
Gandert finished the day 2-for-2 at the plate with four walks drawn and two run's scored.
Carson Fischer was hit by a pitch to bring a run home and Alyssa Wenzel's two-out single scored two more.
Golden continued her steady ways as the Bears cruised to the victory.
UNC dropped the afternoon affair to host Texas Tech 3-0. Haley Boxwell had two of UNC's three hits in the game.
What's Ahead
It's like déjà vu for Northern Colorado on Sunday. The Bears will face Incarnate Word at 9 am and Texas Tech at 11:30 am.
