UNC softball dropped its opener of the Houston Tournament to host Houston
HOUSTON – Northern Colorado softball jumped out to an early lead, but a big third inning for Houston pushed the Cougars past the Bears 9-6 Friday afternoon.
UNC wasted no time getting on the scoreboard scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. The Bears loaded the bases with one out thanks to a pair of singles and Houston error. Freshman Peyton Gale continues to contribute early on for the team delivering a two-RBI single to right putting the team up 2-0.
Northern Colorado scored two more runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 4-1. Again it was the top of the order that set the table. Jaycie Gander and Jenna Kobernick had a pair of singles before Paola Villegas had the big two-out hit.
Villegas found the gap in right-center to score two runs with the bases loaded once again.
The bottom of the third is when Houston responded in a big way scoring five runs on four hits and one error.
Trailing 8-4 entering the sixth, UNC cut the lead in half. Lauren Strathern and Riley Plogger each reached safely to lead off the inning. Kobernick recorded her third hit of the game as UNC took advantage of a Houston error. She drove home the pair to make it an 8-6 ball game.
Following Houston extending its lead in the bottom of the sixth, Villegas led the seventh off with her second double but ended the game stranded there.
