Bears battle, fall to Fordham

Fordham's seventh inning home run pushes them past UNC
PHOENIX – Northern Colorado softball closed out its opening weekend with a hard-fought game against Fordham. The Bears fell late to the Rams 3-2.
Fordham took the early lead scoring once in both the third and fourth inning to go up 2-0 on the Bears. UNC responded with runs in the fifth and sixth.
Freshman Peyton Gale doubled to lead off the fifth inning. She advanced to third on Alison Steinker's single with no outs. UNLV transfer Alexsi Barashkoff brought Gale home to cut the lead in half.
It was another freshman who doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, this time Jaycie Gandert. She was brought home two at-bats later by Gale evening the game at two.
Fordham reclaimed the lead for good in the seventh with a lead-off home run.
Game Notes
- Junior pitcher Erin Caviness gave Fordham issues throughout the game recording eight strikeouts over six-plus innings of work.
- Peyton Gale had a strong opening weekend for UNC hitting .357 with three runs scored, and three RBI.
- Graduate transfer Kaileigh Holland enjoyed a return trip to GCU hitting .417 with a run scored and team-leading five RBI over the five games.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado heads to Las Cruces, New Mexico next weekend for a tournament hosted by New Mexico State. The Bears will play five games against five different teams in three days.
