UNC softball punched its ticket to the Big Sky Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Southern Utah
GREELEY, Colo. – Southern Utah scored in the top half of innings, but UNC responded in the bottom of the same innings to earn the doubleheader sweep on Friday, 3-2 in eight and 4-3. More importantly, with the Northern Colorado's two wins and Idaho States loss to Sacramento State on Friday UNC punched its ticket to the Big Sky Tournament in two weeks.
Erin Caviness earned the win in game one and save in game two striking out 10 batters on the day.
UNC had two home runs on the day, both from seniors. A solo shot from Mady Young in game one and a two-run home run by Emma Brockmann in game two.
Game 1 Recap
It was a defensive battle as both pitchers cruised into the fourth no runs and two hits combined. Southern Utah loaded the bases and used a productive out to go up 1-0. Erin Caviness and the Bears limited the damage to just one run.
Senior Mady Young wasted no time in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off home run on the first pitch. She sent her team-leading fifth ball over the fence in right center to square the game at one.
It stayed tied at one until extra innings. SUU reclaimed the lead with a solo home run from Brooke Brown to left.
The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning bringing up the top of the order in Lauren Strathearn. Strathearn roped a ball past the pitcher and into center scoring Alyssa Wenzel and Natalie Joyner crossed home on an error by SUU's catcher on the play to end it in eight.
Game 2 Recap
Fresh off producing the game-winning hit in extras in game one, Lauren Strathearn speed caused issues off the hop. She reached on a grounder on the infield when Southern Utah's pitcher threw the ball away allowing her to advance all the way to third. She came home to score two batters later on a Dani Young singled to left.
SUU took the lead in third with a pair of runs, but the Bears answered back in the bottom half of the inning.
Mady Young got the rally started with a sharp single through the left side and came home when Emma Brockmann hit a ball to deep right center that caromed off the scoreboard to put UNC back in the lead at 3-2.
Southern Utah evened the game in the fifth taking advantage of a UNC error and scoring a two-out run.
The Bears went back in the lead in what ended up being their final at-bat of the day. Brockmann doubled to the gap in left center to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Anna Martinez came home on a pair of productive outs to give UNC their final lead at 4-3.
After a leadoff double by the Thunderbirds, Caviness came in to shut the door for the final three outs ending with that an exclamation point of her 10th strikeout of the day.
