Softball hosts Colorado Classic this weekend

UNC softball welcomes Colorado State, Oregon State and South Dakota State to Gloria Rodriguez Field
GREELEY, Colo. – Nothing is better than the home opener. UNC Softball hosts the Colorado Classic this weekend for their home opener and Mother Nature has dialed up great weather for Gloria Rodriguez Field. The Bears will welcome Colorado State, Oregon State and South Dakota State.

Friday, March 5 (Gloria Rodriquez Field, Greeley)
10 am – Oregon State vs South Dakota State
Noon – Northern Colorado vs South Dakota State
2 pm – Northern Colorado vs Colorado State
4 pm – Colorado State vs Oregon State
Saturday, March 6 (Ram Field, Fort Collins)
10 am – Northern Colorado vs Oregon State
12:30 pm – Colorado State vs Oregon State
3 pm – Colorado State vs South Dakota State
Sunday, March 7 (Gloria Rodriquez Field, Greeley)
9 am – Northern Colorado vs Oregon State
11 am – Northern Colorado vs South Dakota State
1 pm – Colorado State vs South Dakota State
Leading Off
• UNC competed in the competitive Dixie State Tournament last week. They went to extra innings three times.
• Mady Young hit for the cycle against Dixie State on February 27. She was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Young scored a team-best six runs on the weekend.
• Alyssa Wenzel had the best weekend at the plate for UNC hitting .353. She had a four-hit game against Dixie State. Overall she had a double and triple and drove in three runs.
• This weekend's games mark the home opener for Northern Colorado. The team has a four-game win streak at Gloria Rodriquez Field.
• Northern Colorado and Colorado State are splitting hosting duties this weekend. UNC will host Friday and Sunday's games. CSU will host all of Saturdays.
Scouting Colorado State
Colorado State returned its full 2020 roster this year. So far they are out to a 2-6 record in 2021. The Rams offense is still looking for their bats to heat up in 2021 entering the weekend hitting .180.
Ashley York leads the team with a .294 average and 1.165 ops. She had a pair of home runs last week at the Wildcat Invitational.
CSU was picked to finish third in the Mountain West in 2021.
Scouting Oregon State
Oregon State is 6-2 this year, but have dropped their past two games. The Beavers rank 28th in the nation with 1.38 home runs per game.
Missy Nunes will be a tough out all weekend long. She leads OSU with a .400 average and 1.324 ops. Her four home runs and nine RBI leads the team.
The Beavers have been tough to hit for opponents. OSU is holding opponents to a .177 average and has a 1.16 ERA and 0.96 WHIP.
Scouting South Dakota State
Over the first three weeks of the softball season, South Dakota State has only played one weekend going 4-1 with the lone loss coming to Iowa State.
Freshman pitcher Tori Kniesche earned the Summit League Pitcher of the Week offer after her performance that weekend. She went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and struck out 23 batters.
At the plate, Peyton Daugherty is off to a hot start hitting .471 with a 1.197 OPS.
SDSU was picked to finish second in the Summit League this year.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado and Colorado State will play against each other again next weekend. UNC will play a doubleheader in Fort Collins next Saturday, March 13.
