Softball battles on opening day of Colorado Classic

UNC hosted South Dakota State and Colorado State in its home opener
Trailing 11-0 entering the bottom of the fourth against SDSU, UNC batted around to get back into the game. The Bears offense exploded for five runs in the inning.
Alyssa Wenzel started the inning with a walk and her and Mady Young sat in scoring position with no outs after an SDSU error.
Paola Villegas brought home the Bears' first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Carson Fischer drove in a pair with her single up the middle to make it an 11-3 game.
Fischer came home to score on a single from Natalie Joyner and the final run of the inning was brought home by Lauren Strathearn.
The Bears continued to battle throughout the game scoring a run over the final three innings.
Against Colorado State, the Bears took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Lauren Strathearn and Alyssa Wenzel got the inning going with back-to-back singles. A couple of fielder's choices and errors from CSU brought Wenzel home.
The Rams responded with five runs in the top of the second.
UNC scored again in the bottom half of the inning. The Bears loaded the bases with one out and a Wenzel productive grounder scored the team's second run of the game.
Unfortunately for UNC, the bats went quiet the rest of the way.
Game Notes
- Carson Fischer continues to be hot for the Bears. She went 3-for-6 on the day with three RBI and a run scored.
- Lauren Strathearn is settling into the leadoff role for UNC she was 5-for-9 with two RBI and a run scored.
- Lainey Hanehan had a solid day in the circle. She pitched 10.0 innings striking out four. Of the 10 runs scored against her only four were earned.
What's Ahead
The Colorado Classic continues tomorrow for the Bears in Fort Collins when they take on Oregon State at 10:30 am.
