UNC softball ended is losing streak on Saturday
OMAHA, Neb. – Back in the win column! Northern Colorado softball picked up the 4-1 victory over Nebraska Omaha in their second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Erin Caviness pitched a gem from the circle while Mady Young continued her terror in Omaha.
Caviness ended up with a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and not walking a batter. She faced the minimum through the first five innings allowing just two base runners. Both were erased on double plays.
Young got the scoring going right away for UNC in the top of the first. She doubled to lead off the game to right center and scored on a Paola Villegas single down the right field line. Villegas later scored herself when Nebraskan Carson Fischer drove her in with a chopper up the middle to make it 2-0 Bears.
Fischer scored a run herself later in the game to make it a 3-0 Northern Colorado lead. She ended the day 1-3 with a run scored and RBI.
Young added on another insurance run for UNC with her second double of the game. Once again finding the right center gap, driving home Katie Simonsgaard in the sixth.
Both Young and teammate Alison Steinker had a pair of hits in the game. Young was 2-4 with two doubles, a run scored and RBI. Steinker was 2-3 and reached on the UNO error that scored Fischer.
Omaha tried a late rally in the seventh, scoring one run, but Caviness shut the door on the 4-1 victory.
In the first game of the day, Young scored both of UNC's runs in an 11-2 loss to South Dakota State. She was 1-3 with the one hit being a solo home run, her third of the season.
