Bears battle in first day of Connie Caulsenn Classic

Mady Young and Paola Villegas record multi hit games
OMAHA, Neb. – After a week's hiatus Northern Colorado softball returned to action on Friday at the Connie Claussen Classic hosted by Nebraska Omaha. The Bears dropped their first two games of the weekend 10-2 and 11-0 respectively to UNO and South Dakota State.
The Bears were the very first guests to the newly finished Connie Caulssen Field as the Mavericks played their inaugural game their Friday. UNO jumped out to the quick 2-0 lead on a home run a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.
Paola Villegas had a pair of doubles against Omaha and scored the team's first run of the game. She lined a ball down the left field line to lead off the fourth inning with UNC trailing 3-0. Emma Brockman brought Villegas home on a one-out single to center.
Villegas finished the game 2-for-3 with the pair of doubles and a run scored.
The top of the order produced Northern Colorado's other run of the game in the fifth inning. Alyssa Wenzel singled to right to reach base and showed off her wheels on the base paths after that. Mady Young brought Wenzel home on a double to the gap in left center.
Young also finished the game 2-for-3 with a RBI.
In the night cap, South Dakota State stayed hot limiting UNC to one hit and two walks. Both walks were drawn by Young.
Brooklyn Himmelberg earned her first career start against the Jackrabbits as the designated player.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado will once again face the Mavericks and Jackrabbits on Saturday. UNC and SDSU are set to tangle at noon and then against UNO at 2 pm.
