Scouting the Eagles
First-year head coach Missy Strasburg is no stranger to Colorado and the Bears. Before landing the head gig in Cheney, Strasburg spent the last five seasons at Air Force. With five wins already this season, Strasburg has equaled the Eagles' total from a season ago.
A major reason for the team's success has been the play of senior goalkeeper Kelsee Winston. Winston leads the Big Sky in saves per game (7.85), total saves (102) and is fourth in save percentage (.829).
Offensively, sophomore Madison Kem leads Eastern Washington with three goals on just six shots. Four other Eagles have tallied at least two goals this fall.
History against Eastern Washington
The Bears are 10-5-4 against the Eagles since entering the Big Sky Conference. UNC is also 3-0-1 in the last four over EWU, including the championship match in 2019 that sent the Bears to its second Division I NCAA tournament appearance.
Scouting the Vandals
Idaho is right in the hunt for one of the final spots in the Big Sky Tournament entering the final two weekends. With a 2-3-1 conference mark, head coach Jeremy Clevenger will be eying for some shock waves with both the Griz and the Bears on deck.
The Vandals' defense has been a key reason to keep Idaho in games this year. As a team, they rank No. 2 in the conference in save percentage (.825) and shutout percentage (.429). Senior goalkeeper Avrie Fox has earned most of the minutes between the sticks. Fox is ranked second in the Big Sky in shutouts with six, good enough for 20th nationally. She's also third in save percentage (.835) and fourth in saves per game (5.46).
History against Idaho
Northern Colorado will be looking to even the all-time series against the Vandals (4-5-2). However, it's been the Bears who have enjoyed the spoils as of late, going 3-0-1 in the last four.
Last Time Out
The freshmen duo of Lucy Hart and Sydney Engelkins powered the Bears past Montana last Sunday. Hart's defensive prowess and Engelkins' first career goal were the difference in making sure UNC stayed undefeated in conference play. The 5-0 start is Northern Colorado's best since joining the Big Sky.
On this Day
UNC is 4-3-0 on October 15, and a similar 5-4-1 on October 17. Back in 2010, Northern Colorado prevailed, 3-2, over Portland State in a double-overtime affair on October 15.
