Northern Colorado hosted its home tournament and went 1-1 on Friday
Northern Colorado softball hosted its first softball games of the season and pulled off an exciting walk-off to close the day. UNC defeated Nebraska-Omaha 2-1 in walk-off fashion to split game Friday in the Northern Colorado Tournament.
In the first game of the day, Utah Valley defeated UNC 9-0 in five innings. The Bears struggled to get any offense going against the Wolverines' Brooke Carter. Maggie Thurston suffered the loss after allowing three runs in 0.2 innings of work.
UNC would rally in game two against the Mavericks to even up their home record. The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh.
Omaha recorded three straight, infield hits to score the games first run and give the Mavericks the 1-0 lead over UNC in the seventh. All three hits were hard hit balls, with two at pitcher Erin Caviness, forcing her to think quickly and protect herself.
The Bears quickly created a scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh as Maddee Blood-Smyth and Brandi Haller both were hit by a pitch with one out in the inning.
Katie Simongaard reached on a fielder's choice, but would steal second base to give UNC runners on second and third with two outs. Amanda Hedges hit a bloop single down the right field line. Omaha's right fielder was playing deep, which allowed Simonsgaard and pinch runner, Alyssa Wenzel to score.
UNC rallied to top the Mavericks and improved to 7-15 on the season. Erin Caviness earned the win after throwing seven innings, allowing one run and striking out 11 batters. Mady Young hit her first triple of the season in the game and Lauren Strathearn went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
What's Ahead?
Northern Colorado softball is back on the field for two games tomorrow, starting with UNI at 12 p.m.(MST). UNC will take on Utah Valley for the second time at 2 p.m. or 30 minutes after completion of the first game.
