Northern Colorado swept the season series against Eastern Washington with a 67-61 win
CHENEY, Wash. – It was a story of two different halves for Northern Colorado women's basketball, as they defeated Eastern Washington 67-61. UNC trailed by ten at halftime but surged past the Eagles in the third quarter and extended the lead in the fourth to secure the win.
"We played with great resolve through a bumpy second quarter," head coach Jenny Huth said. "I thought Alexis' passing, Alisha finishing and Mic hitting her threes was a big reason we took care of business. Defensively, we had some lapses but we have been working hard to finish games and today we did that in the fourth."
The Bears shot 41 percent for the game and 36 percent from three-point range. EWU was 45.1 percent shooting from the floor in the game.
Micayla Isenbart matched her career high with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting, included a career best, six made three pointers. Alisha Davis added 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while grabbing eight rebounds.
"I'm really happy for Micayla. She's wanting the shot and that's the difference," Huth said.
UNC exploited the Eagles mistakes in the game, forcing 17 turnovers and scoring 20 points off them. The Bears posted a season-low in turnovers, committing six in the game.
The first quarter was a close contest between the Bears and Eagles, as UNC shot 37.5 percent out of the gate. EWU had a 53.3 percent mark and outscored the Bears, 17-14 in the quarter for the early lead. Isenbart set the tone for her night in the first, scoring seven points on 3-of-4 shooting to keep pace with the Eagles.
In the second quarter, EWU's defense disrupted UNC's offense, limiting them to a 21.4 percent shooting mark. The Eagles turned in a 46.2 field goal percentage to extend their lead to 32-22 at halftime.
UNC's offense would come out firing in the third quarter, as Isenbart hit a pair of threes and Davis added two baskets to pull within three of EWU at 37-34. After the teams traded points, Isenbart hit two more three-pointers to tie the game at 42 at the 4:59 mark of the quarter. The Eagles would take the lead on the next possession, but Davis tied the game up again at 44. Jasmine Gayles delivered the go-ahead, three-pointer to give the Bears the one-point lead. UNC would hold a 52-50 advantage over EWU after three quarters. The Bears shot a blistering 63.2 percent from the floor in the quarter.
Gayles would connect for another three-pointer to extend out the UNC lead and Davis continued to score effectively in the paint. The Bears would push the lead to as much as nine in the quarter and the team finished shooting 33.3 percent. UNC would outscore the Eagles, 15-11 in the quarter to grab the 67-61 win.
In the second half, UNC outscored EWU 45-29 to sweep the season series against the Eagles. The team only committed one turnover in the second half as well.
"At halftime, we talked about our ball-screen defense so really locking into that," Huth added. "Offensively, we just spread the floor in the second half and that we played more patient."
