Bears Go 1-1 on First Day of Cardinal Classic

Northern Colorado defeated St. Johns and lost to Lamar
BEAUMONT, TX – Northern Colorado softball split games on the first day of the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Lamar University. UNC started the day with an 8-7 victory over St. Johns, holding off a late rally from the Red Storm. The Bears would drop the second game, to host Lamar, 5-2.
Bears vs. Red Storm
Lainey Hanehan started in the circle for UNC against St. Johns' Kayla Kmett.
Both teams put runners on in the first inning, but no damage was caused by either side. The Red Storm would load the bases in the bottom of the second, but Hanehan left them stranded on base.
UNC would push across the game's first run in the top of third. Lauren Strathearn singled and stole second base to get into scoring position to lead off the inning. Alyssa Wenzel singled down the left field line that brought Strathearn into score.
St. Johns tied the game at one in the bottom of the third on a UNC fielding error.
It was Strathearn delivering the clutch in the top of the fourth to give UNC the lead. Strathearn singled up the middle and Amanda Hedges and Natalie Joyner would score.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Red Storm delivered with two runs on four hits to tie the game at three.
The Bears' lineup would find its swing in the top of the sixth, as they team loaded the bases with one out. Wenzel knocked a double to left center to score Joyner and Brandi Haller. In the next at bat, Mady Young reached on a fielding error and allowed Hedges and Wenzel to score. Emma Brockmann got in on the hit parade next, singling to shortstop to bring Young into score. UNC was up 8-3 on St. Johns.
The Red Storm nearly matched UNC in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits. Hanehan was knocked out of the game and Reyna Caudillo came in on relief in the inning. After a hit and a walk, Erin Caviness replaced Caudillo and ended the St. Johns' threat.
Caviness held off the Red Storm in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 8-7 win. Hanehan earned her second win of the season, pitching five innings, with seven earned runs and three strikeouts. Angela Saric took the loss after coming on in relief in the fifth inning.
Bears vs. Cardinals
Maggie Thurston started game two for the Bears against Lamar's Aaliyah Ruiz.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the first after a wild pitch from Thurston brought a Lamar run in to score. Neither team scored in the second and third innings, with the teams combining for only one base runner.
With Mady Young and Emma Brockmann on base in the top of the fourth with one out, Taylor Puga delivered with a single to second base and the Bears raced in front, 2-1.
It did not take long for the Cardinals to respond, as they struck for three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. Lamar was up 4-2 on UNC.
Ruiz kept the Bears in check with only two singles for the next two innings. The Cardinals would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after they stole home base.
UNC went down in order in the top of the seventh and Lamar won the game 5-2. Thurston suffered the loss after allowing five runs in five innings pitched. Ruiz pitched a complete game, with two earned runs.
Game Notes
Northern Colorado will resume games Saturday, leading off against Lamar at 11:30 a.m.(MST) and followed by St. Johns at 4:30.

Game Notes
- Eight players recorded hits against St. Johns, with four multi-hit games. Alyssa Wenzel, Emma Brockmann, Natalie Joyner and Lauren Strathearn all posted multiple hits Friday. Wenzel recorded her third multi-hit game of the season.
- Brockmann was 4-of-5 at the plate and recording one RBI, whiles scoring one run between the two games.
- At the plate, UNC struck out four times and walked twice in 60 total at bats.
