Bears Fall in Saturday Games Against Cardinals, Red Storm

Northern Colorado went 0-2 on the second day of the Cardinal Classic
BEAUMONT, TX – Northern Colorado had two more games on the schedule Saturday, dropping both matchups. UNC fell 4-1 to host Lamar in the first game and then 3-2 to St. Johns later in the day.
Bears vs. Cardinals
Erin Caviness made her first career start in the circle against Lamar on Saturday afternoon. She was up against Lamar's Shelby Mixon.
UNC scored first in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Brandi Haller that brought Natalie Joyner home. Caviness was solid, holding the Cardinals to won hit through the first three innings.
Lamar got to Caviness in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits, aided by a UNC fielding error. The Cardinals were now in front of the Bears, 3-1.
After a scoreless fifth, the Cardinals added one run with an RBI single, in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-1 lead.
Mackenzie Savage came on in relief and retired the UNC hitters in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Lamar took the second game from UNC this weekend, 4-1. Caviness took the loss after pitching six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Bears vs. Red Storm
Kamryan Trujillo was in the circle for the Bears second game of the day against St. Johns. The Red Storm threw Erin Brown.
St. John's opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single to left field for the 1-0 lead.
UNC threatened in the bottom of the second after Brandi Haller doubled and Maddee Blood-Smyth singled to put two on with one out. The Bears could not come up with the clutch hit to bring Haller in and the game remained 1-0 for the Red Storm.
In the top of the third, St. Johns tacked on another run with another RBI single into center field.
Reyna Caudillo would then replace Trujillo in the circle.
The Bears again threatened in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, but could not convert the scoring opportunity.
In the bottom of the fifth, UNC would finally get to Brown, scoring one run on two hits. After Mady Young doubled, Caudillo doubled to left center to get the Bears on the Board. The team was down only 2-1 now.
UNC would then tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Lauren Strathearn singled through the left side to bring in Katie Simonsgaard to score.
St. Johns struck back with an RBI double in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead over the Bears.
Emma Brockmann walked in the bottom of the seventh to give UNC the baserunners, but the Bears were retired in the inning.
The Red Storm held on for the 3-2 win against UNC. Caudillo was hit with the loss after allowing one run in four innings of work.
Game Notes
Northern Colorado will finish its time in the Cardinal Classic on Sunday against St. Johns at 9 a.m.(MST).

- UNC's pitchers showed their command on Saturday, as Erin Caviness, Kamryan Trujillo and Reyna Caudillo combined for nine strikeouts and only one walk.
- As a team, UNC's batters struck out five times and walked twice.
- Lauren Strathearn went 3-of-5 on Saturday with one RBI. Strathearn leads UNC with a .353 average this season.
- Maddee Blood-Smyth went 3-of-6 on the day, starting both games.
