Inside-Outside Game Powers Bears to Win Over Vikings

Northern Colorado topped Portland State with a complete game Monday night
PORTLAND, Ore.- Northern Colorado women's basketball put together a complete game performance, defeating Portland State, 78-55. UNC was clicking on all aspects of the game Monday night and never trailed against the Vikings.
"We started out really strong," head coach Jenny Huth said. "We locked into our defensive game plan and shot it well early and just never looked back. Our inside-outside game today was rock solid. This is who we are and will continue to be this season."
The Bears controlled the paint with 43 rebounds, including 18 offensive. UNC had a 38-16 scoring advantage inside.
UNC had a strong night from the floor as well, finishing with a 46.3 shooting percentage. The team also was 40.9 percent shooting from three-point range. Jasmine Gayles set a new career high with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range.
Alexis Chapman added 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting and 3-of-8 on threes. Bridget Hintz scored 12 points on 5-of-7 and Ali Meyer added 10 on 5-of-10 shooting. The offense was aided by a career high, 13 assists from Micayla Isenbart.
"I thought Ali and Bridget played so solid and played to their strengths well," Huth said. "I thought the whole team contributed to this one tonight. Everyone did their job to their best when they were in. We had a season high, 26 assists, which was huge!"
In the first quarter, Chapman connected for a pair of threes early to give the team a quick lead and confidence behind the arc. Chapman would score the team's first eight points before Gayles, Meyer and Hintz hit jump shots to extend give UNC the 18-13 lead after the first quarter.
The jump shots continued to fall in the second quarter for the Bears, as the team extended the lead out to 22-13 over the Vikings. UNC's forwards powered the team's scoring in the second, as Meyer and Hintz each scored six points in the quarter. As a team, the Bears shot 60 percent in the quarter and the built a 38-25 lead at halftime.
UNC scored effectively in the third quarter, as its was the Bears' backcourt that drove the offense. Gayles and Chapman each put in five points behind a 42.9 percent team shooting performance in the quarter. With another strong shooting quarter, UNC was up 56-36 on Portland St., heading to the final quarter.
Gayles would hit two more three-pointers in the fourth quarter and UNC continued to score at will, finishing with 22 points in the quarter. The Bears were on cruise control and closed out the Vikings, 78-55.
UNC improved to 6-6 in conference and 10-11 overall this season. The Bears completed the regular season sweep of the Vikings after defeating them at home in December.
"We tell our team to leave the past in the past, take the lessons, learn and live to play in the present," Huth added.

Northern Colorado will return home and host Northern Arizona on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
The game will be UNC's annual Play4Kay game and fans who wear pink will receive a $5 general admission ticket.

- Northern Colorado took advantage of Portland State's mistakes, scoring 26 points off 19 Viking turnovers.
- Micayla Isenbart surpassed her career high in assists by four. Isenbart also nearly had a double-double, finishing with eight rebounds.
- UNC used its 18 offensive rebounds to score 21 second chance points.
- Ali Meyer also just missed a double-double with 10 points and a game-high, nine rebounds. Meyer also recorded a career-best five steals against the Vikings.
- Jasmine Gayles topped her previous scoring career high by one point tonight. Gayles also recorded a career-best, five made three-pointers.
- UNC went a perfect 7-for-7 at the free-throw line Monday night.
- The Bears bench outscored the Vikings, 25-21.
- Mele Finau had a career high five assists in 15 minutes played.
