Northern Colorado could not sustain an effective first quarter against Northern Arizona
Northern Colorado women's basketball showed improvement in their second game against Northern Arizona, but could not quite get over the hump to get the win. UNC dropped the game to NAU, 71-60 on Thursday night.
The Bears finished with a 35.4 shooting percentage in the game, while NAU had a 36.5 percent shooting night. Alisha Davis led UNC with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Alexis Chapman had 15 of her own on 5-of-19 shooting. The Lumberjacks, Jacey Bailey scored a game high 24 points.
UNC were out of the gate fast in the first quarter, shooting 58.8 percent from the floor and scoring 28 points. Davis scored 12 of her 16 points in the quarter and was a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals. The Bears defense held NAU to 22.7 percent shooting. The hot start gave UNC a 12-point lead after the first 10 minutes.
NAU got back in the game in the second quarter, keeping the Bears to a 35.7 percent shooting. The Lumberjacks were not much more effective on offensive end, shooting 35.7 as well and scoring 16 points again. UNC's lead had been trimmed down to 38-32 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Bears found some offensive rhythm, but were still limited to a 33.3 percent shooting mark. The team scored 16 points, but the Lumberjacks found their shooting stroke, finishing with a 46.7 percentage in the quarter. NAU outscored UNC 21-16 in the quarter and almost held the lead until a buzzer-beater, three-pointer from Chapman kept UNC's lead at one, 54-53 going to the fourth.
Neither team scored until the 7:19 mark of the fourth quarter, as NAU took a 55-54 lead. Chapman scored on a layup to briefly retake the lead for UNC, but the Lumberjacks went in front with a three-pointer. NAU began to pull away from the Bears, going on an 11-0 run to separate for good. The Lumberjacks went on to win the game, 71-60.
