Northern Colorado split games against Southern Utah in a doubleheader on Friday
Game 1
It was Valerie Vidal getting the call to start the first game of the series and she was opposed by Southern Utah's Hannah Wynn.
UNC blew the game open in the top of the first, with five runs on three hits to keep their momentum from the home stand going. Emma Brockmann delivered with a single to right field that scored Mady Young and Kenzie Kudrna. Following a fielder's choice from Katie Simonsgaard, UNC was up 3-0 as Hailee Swanson came into score on the play. Dani Young would keep up the pressure with an RBI double to right field that scored Brockmann. A Thunderbird error would allow another run to score and the Bears were up 5-0 after one inning.
Vidal was hitting her spots for the Bears, allowing only two hits and three baserunners through the first four innings.
In the top of the fourth, UNC added a pair of runs after Mady Young singled down the right field line to score both Natalie Joyner and Kudrna. The Bears had a 7-0 advantage over the Thunderbirds.
Southern Utah would come back in force in the bottom of the fifth, by way of a grand slam from Kendall Kapitzke. The Thunderbirds cut the Bears lead to 7-4.
Despite the sudden shift, Vidal was not phased and shutdown Southern Utah to preserve the 7-4 win for UNC. Vidal earned her eighth win of the season, pitching seven innings with four runs allowed, none earned although.
The Bears chased Wynn early with the five-run first inning that proved to be the difference in the game.
Game 2
Taylor Puga was in the circle for UNC to start game two of the doubleheader. She went against the Southern Utah's Hannah Lilly
UNC started fast for the second straight game, scoring three runs in the first inning. Mady Young would ingle up the middle to score the Bears first run of the game. Emma Brockmann would continue to swing a hot bat, blasting a two-run, home run to left field. Before the Thunderbirds could even bat, UNC was up 3-0.
Puga held Southern Utah in check to start out, allowing a pair of hits in the first two innings.
The Thunderbirds got to Puga in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly. The Beras lead was trimmed to 3-1. In the next inning, Southern Utah scored another run on an infield single to bring UNC's lead down to one.
Valerie Vidal relieved Puga in the fifth inning to try and keep the Bears lead.
In the top of the sixth, UNC was threatening with a runner on third, but could not convert the opportunity.
Southern Utah tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with one run on two hits.
Neither team could break the tie in the seventh inning and the game went to extras.
After UNC's hitters were retired in the top of the eighth, the Thunderbirds walked-off the game in the bottom half on a Bear throwing error. Southern Utah won the game 4-3.
Vidal was tagged with the loss after allowing one earned run in 3.1 innings of work.
