@BearsSoftball's Bats Explode, Thunderbirds Win Series

The Saturday series finale was an offensive showcase
Maggie Thurston started for UNC in the circle and faced Southern Utah's Hannah Lilly.
The first inning success continued for the Bears, as the put up three runs to race out to a quick lead. Emma Brockmann picked up right where she left off Friday, singling to bring in the first UNC run. Katie Simonsgaard had the big hit in the inning with a double to right field that score two more runs for the Bears.
Southern Utah's bats were silent until the third inning, when the Thunderbirds scored eight runs on eight hits to put the Bears back on their heels. UNC was suddenly down 8-3 in the game and Thurston was replaced by Valerie Vidal in the inning.
UNC struck back in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs on seven hits to reclaim the lead. Vidal singled up the middle to score the Bears first run of the inning, as Emma Brockmann came into score. With two outs and two runners on, UNC recorded five straight singles to power the big inning. Natalie Joyner, Kenzie Kudrna, Mady Young, Brockmann and Dani Young all recorded hits to give the Bears a 10-8 lead.
Despite the big inning form UNC, the Thunderbirds responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits. Taylor Puga entered the game to relive Vidal in the inning and the Bears trailed 13-10. Southern Utah would add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, with three runs on three hits for a 16-10 advantage over UNC.
The Bears mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh, after loading the bases. Hailee Swanson had a fielder's choice that allowed Dani Young to score. UNC managed to score the solo run in the top of the inning and Southern Utah went onto win the game 16-11.
Vidal was hit with the loss, after allowing seven earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched. UNC's record fell to 5-6 in conference and 11-30 overall. Southern Utah's improved its conference record to 3-6 and 5-25 overall.
Game Notes
- Northern Colorado and Southern Utah combined for 27 runs and 33 hits on Saturday. Eight players recorded multi-hit games between the two teams.
- The Bears had season high in runs scored, hits and at bats
- UNC recorded a season-high, 11 walks and had only two strikeouts in the game.
- Emma Brockmann continued her strong weekend, batting three-for-four with three RBIs and two runs scored, along with one double.
- Dani Young came to the plate five times and recorded two hits, along with scoring three runs.
- Kenzie Kudrna also went three-four-four with two runs scored and one RBI, along with a stolen base.
- In the game, UNC left 14 runners on base.
Next Up
Northern Colorado will return to Greely to host Sacramento State in a three-game series next weekend. It will be the final home games for UNC's five seniors, Valerie Vidal, Madi Schmidt, Kenzie Kudrna, Cheyenne Talmadge and Jordyn Wiatrak.
