Northern Colorado split games on the final day of the Billiken Spring Tournament
SAINT LOUIS, MO- Northern Colorado softball picked up a much needed 6-3 win against Nebraska-Omaha in eight innings during the team's final game of the Billiken Spring Tournament. UNC dropped its first game of the day against Detroit-Mercy 4-1.
Â
"We continue to make changes to find the right formula," head coach Ben Garica said. "Today, we had two of the three components necessary to win. Hopefully, we can use this as our motivation for next week at home."
Bears vs. Titans
Valerie Vidal got the nod to start in the circle on Friday and she was opposed by Detroit-Mercy's Liz Murphy.
In the top of the first inning, the Titans scored a run on an RBI double to take the early lead over UNC.
Detroit-Marcy extended its advantage in the top of the third inning with a two-run, home run from Jorda Manno. The Bears were now trailing 3-0.
UNC was not able to string hits together against Murphy, limiting the scoring opportunities to attempt to tie the game. Murphy had her stuff working on Saturday, pitching seven innings and allowing only four hits.
Now in the top of the seventh, the Titans added one run on a fielder's choice to pad their lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Dani Young broke up the shutout with solo home run to left center and put UNC on the board. The lead for Detroit-Mercy was down to 4-1.
After giving up a single to Emma Brockmann, Murphy got the final out of the game on a ground out to preserve the win for the Titans.
Vidal suffered the loss, despite a solid outing with seven innings pitched and three earned runs, while striking out eight and walking two. Murphy allowed the one run on her way to the complete game win.
Bears vs. Mavericks
Valerie Vidal was in the circle for game two of the day and she was facing Nebraska-Omaha's Sydney Hampton.
After a scoreless first inning, UNC jumped in front of the Mavericks in the top of the second. Shaena Robinson lead off the inning with a solo home run to left field, her third of the season.
The Bears wasted no time adding to their lead in the top of the second after Cheyenne Talmadge lead-off with a double down the left field line. Kenzie Kudrna would deliver for UNC with a single, this time down the right field line to bring in Talmadge to score. UNC was now up 2-0.
Nebraska-Omaha would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth, with a solo home run from Lexi Burkhardt.
Vidal was solid for the Bears, limiting the Mavericks baserunners and keep UNC in front.
The offense for UNC could not get Vidal any more breathing room after the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Nebraska-Omaha managed to rally and score on an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at two.
Now in extra innings, Talmadge would start out on second base for the Bears. UNC loaded the bases and Talmadge would score on a Mavericks error to give the Bears the lead. Dani Young would then walk to bring in another run and lead grew. Emma Brockmann came up with the back-breaking, single to right field that scored two more runs. UNC found itself up 6-2 on Nebraska-Omaha.
Vidal returned to the circle to close out the Mavericks. Nebraska-Omaha scored one run on an RBI single to close the gap, but Vidal did not panic. She retired the next two batters to get the win for the Bears.
Vidal pitched the complete, eight-inning game, allowing two earned runs and striking out eight, while walking four. Vidal earned her fifth win of the season.
