@BearsSoftball Drops Doubleheader Against Weber State

Northern Colorado went 0-2 in its first two home games of the season
"We have traffic on the base every time," head coach Ben Garcia. "Our infielders are doing a phenomenal job. Mady Young is doing a lot; diving around and saving us a lot. Hailee is doing a great job as well. 14 hits are going to catch up with you and we're leaving too many runners on base. We have to change our mindset that we're okay with what we are doing and that's not working."
Game 1
Valerie Vidal was in the circle for UNC to start out against Weber State, as the Wildcats Tatiana Su'esu'e opposing her.
The Bears started their first home game quickly, as Cheyenne Talmadge would reach with a lead-off single in the bottom of the first.
After being moved to second, Mady Young would single to bring Talmadge into score. Hailee Swanson would get an infield single and would steal second after Young stole third. Shaena Robinson would keep the bats rolling with an infield single that scored Young and
Swanson and the Bears were up 3-0.
Kenzie Kudrna would open the bottom of the third up with a lead-off double. Kudrna would steal third and then a sacrifice fly from Swanson would allow her to score. The UNC lead grew to 4-0.
Vidal was solid in the circle, shutting out the Wildcats through the first four innings.
Weber State began to pick away at the Bears lead, scoring one run on two hits in the top of the fifth. Moving to the top of the sixth, the Wildcats scored two runs on two hits to pull within one run of UNC at 4-3.
Courtney Pestka delivered the big hit for Weber State, launching a three-run, home run off Vidal in the top of the seventh with two outs. The homer gave the Wildcats the 6-4 lead over UNC.
The Bears could not counter in the bottom of the seventh and Weber State pulled off the comeback win.
Vidal took the loss after pitching seven innings and allowing five earned runs, along with 14 hits.
Game 2
In the second game of the day, Maggie Thurston was called on to start in the circle. She was opposed by the Wildcats Kate Donaldson.
It was Weber State who scored first in this game, striking for three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning to grab the lead.
UNC responded with one run on two hits in the bottom of the first. Mady Young singled with two outs and Hailee Swanson was hit by a pitch to two runners on. Like the first game, Sheana Robinson came through with the clutch hit with a single to center field to score Young. The Bears trailed 3-1 after the first inning.
The game settled into a pitching duel between Thurston and Donaldson. After the rocky first inning, Thurston allowed four hits over the next four innings, with no runs allowed.
Weber State scored a run in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to give the Wildcats the 4-1 lead over the Bears.
UNC loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but missed the opportunity to produce any runs.
In the top of the seventh, Weber State added two more runs on two hits to build a 6-1 lead over the Bears.
UNC was retired in order to end the game in the bottom of the seventh. Thurston suffered the loss, after pitching seven innings, with six runs, only two of which were earned.
"I wish I could tell you that we have learned the lesson, but this is kind of the way the season has gone," Garcia added. "We keep giving them four or five outs on plays that we should make. Any team can take advantage of that."
Game Notes
- Shaena Robinson went two-for-six on Friday, with three RBIs to lead the Bears.
- Mady Young finished the day two-for-five, scoring two runs and recording one RBI, while drawing two walks.
- Emma Brockmann went two-for-five as well, with one double and one walk.
- Kenzie Kudrna was two-for-six with one run scored and one double between the two games.
Following the Bears
Northern Colorado will finish its three-game series against Weber State at 12 pm on Saturday at Gloria Rodriguez Field.
