OGDEN, Utah – It was a matchup of the two remaining unbeaten teams in Big Sky play and it lived up to all the hype. Northern Colorado controlled play for the majority of the game and took the lead 1-0, but Weber State scored to force overtime and then was able to remain unbeaten in conference play when they scored the winner in the 98th minute for a 2-1 victory.
"I thought we played a great game," said UNC head coach Tim Barrera. "We started slow, but picked it up and played really well in the second half."
When UNC wasn't getting shots off, it seemed like play was stuck in the middle third of the field. So when WSU took over possession just inside its side of the stripe it was no big deal, the Wildcats had a player go down, which left UNC with the advantage. However, it might have also distracted the defense as the ball went right through the middle of the field almost clipping the WSU player laying on the grass, but it found its way to Madison Garlock in stride, the senior was left in a one-on-one situation with freshman keeper Taylor Washington and in that moment seniority won out.
Only one of the top four goal scorers in the conference doesn't play for UNC, that's Morgan Quarnberg of Weber State. The Wildcats took a free kick from near midfield, it was headed out of the box and rolled to the right, where Quarnberg found it and placed it in the back of the net for the equalizer.
The Bears known for their offense put the highly touted Wildcats defense to the test in the first half and it stood up. Maddie Roberts proved to be a test WSU couldn't pass. Taylor Bray forced the 'Cats defense into a rare misplay and Roberts was there to pick up the loose ball and she raced toward the net and beat Nikki Pittman for the first goal of the match. UNC had a handful of other chances in the ensuing minutes, but Pittman and the defense didn't allow UNC to find the scoreboard again.
"We created enough chances to win the game but made a couple costly mistakes. It was a good game between two good teams," Barrera said.
Quarnberg moved into second place in the league with five goals, but Roberts still leads all BSC players after she scored her sixth of the season.
UNC concludes its road trip Sunday in Pocatello. Idaho State lost to Montana Friday night, 1-0.
