POCATELLO, Idaho. – It was a disappointing Friday night for UNC soccer, but they weren't going to let Weber State beat them twice by overlooking 2-10 Idaho State on Sunday. Just a 1:45 into the match and Taylor Bray set up Lexi Pulley who opened the scoring with her fifth goal of the season. The Bears wouldn't stop scoring, two more goals in the opening half followed by a pair in the second led Northern Colorado to a blowout 5-0 win over the Bengals.
"I was happy with how we played from the opening whistle," said UNC head coach Tim Barrera. "It was a great way to respond to a tough loss on Friday night."
Just six minutes after Pulley scored, Maddie Barkow, kept the good feeling going when she beat Laule'a Phillips, which made it 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the match. The first half closed out with the first career goal by Maddie Duren and UNC went to the break with a big 3-0 lead.
The Bears came out determined not to just run out the final 45 minutes. In the span of 52 seconds, UNC scored a pair of goals that pushed the lead out even more. At the 58:36 mark, Mariel Gutierrez found Taylor Bray for the Bears fourth goal of the day. At the 59:28 mark, Gutierrez found herself on the other end of a great pass from Lindsi Jennings and the senior's fifth goal of the season turned into the Bears fifth goal of the match and the rout was nearly complete.
"We did a really nice job of finding space and then being able to attack when we found the space," Barrera said.
The dominance extended through the stat sheet, UNC had 10 shots on goal compared to just five for ISU. They had six corner kicks, while the Bengals didn't attempt a single one. The only category Idaho State controlled was the foul column, they had 19 fouls called against them Sunday.
The effort was well-rounded thanks to the play of Taylor Washington who did her part. The freshman keeper picked up the third shutout of her first season.
UNC is now 4-1 in conference play.
Northern Colorado returns home next weekend for its final two home matches of the season, Friday they play host to Northern Arizona and Sunday they close out the home schedule against Southern Utah.
