GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado soccer is proud to announce the newest members of the Bears family. These talented student-athletes exemplify excellence on and off the field and bring skill, determination, and passion to the program.
MEET THE SIGNEES
THORDIS MELSTED | GOALKEEPER | HAFNARFJÖRÐUR, ICELAND | VERZLUNARSKÓLI ÍSLANDS, 2023
Thordis Melsted joins the Bears from Iceland after previously competing at the University of North Alabama. She totaled 166 minutes on the season, faced 31 shots, and recorded eight saves. Her eight-save performance against North Florida marked a team high at the time.
An accomplished multi-sport athlete, Thordis is a U17 Soccer National Champion (2023) and a track and field national champion, earning titles in the long jump, triple jump, 4x100m relay, 4x200m relay, and hammer throw.
Melsted plans to pursue a degree in Business Administration with a focus on Human Resource Management.
She chose UNC for its strong team culture and coaching staff and is excited to begin her collegiate journey in Colorado.
Outside of soccer, Thordis enjoys hiking and spending time outdoors.
ASHLYN CALLAHAN | CENTER BACK / OUTSIDE BACK | ARVADA, COLO. | RALSTON VALLEY HS
Ashlyn Callahan, a Colorado native from Arvada, joins the Bears as a versatile defender with a strong competitive background. She is the daughter of Beth and Andrew Callahan and has two siblings, Gavin and Darcy.
A decorated soccer player, Callahan earned ECNL RL All-Regional League (Mountain) honors during the 2023–24 season, was named Second Team All-Conference in Jefferson County (5A) as a junior and received All-League Honorable Mention recognition as a sophomore and freshman.
Callahan chose UNC for the opportunity to continue developing as a player while competing for wins with the Bears. The campus location was a perfect fit, allowing her to stay close to family, and she is excited to become part of the Greeley community.
Outside of soccer, Ashlyn enjoys flag football and spending time outdoors.
JANIE HANSON | ATTACKING CENTER MIDFIELD | EDMONDS, WASH. | EDMONDS WOODWAY HS
Jane Kate Hanson joins Northern Colorado from Edmonds, Washington. She is the daughter of Shelby and Jason Hanson, both Western Washington University alumni, and has one sibling, Ben.
With an impressive athletic resume, Hanson earned First Team All-Wesco honors in soccer during her junior and senior seasons after being named Second Team All-Wesco as a sophomore. She also earned First Team All-Wesco recognition in the 1600 and 3200 meters during her junior year in track and field, qualifying for the state championships in both events. Hanson made a state appearance in soccer during her senior season and served as team captain for both basketball and soccer.
A four-year varsity soccer player, Hanson led her team in scoring during her junior and senior seasons, paced the team in assists as a senior, and was voted team MVP as a junior. At the club level, she competed in the NPL Finals in 2024 and the NPL National Cup in 2025.
Hanson chose UNC for the opportunity to compete at a high level in soccer while prioritizing her academics, with plans to pursue a degree in Education.
Outside of soccer, Hanson enjoys spending time with family and friends, going for runs, and staying involved in school activities.
"We are excited to welcome three more recruits to our 2026 team," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "All three are multi-sport athletes who are also great students. Ashlyn can play anywhere across the back line and possesses tremendous speed and closing ability. She was also being recruited to play flag football and played high school soccer with Izzy Martinez. Thordis is an experienced goalkeeper with excellent shot-stopping ability and great distribution, and she grew up as a national champion track athlete in Iceland. Janie Hanson is a three-sport athlete (track and basketball) who is a true two-way midfielder with a tremendous motor and the ability to score goals."
