@BearsSoftball Splits With New Mexico in Pueblo

Pueblo, Colo – For the first time in 2017, Northern Colorado tasted Centennial State air for a full game, two in fact, as today they took on the Lobos of New Mexico. While both teams split the distance in traveling to the Runyon Sports Complex on Saturday morning, the two also split the day's double header.
GAME 1
Starting pitcher, Jayme Reddacliff had some of her best stuff early. The Australian native forced a pair of groundouts and earned her first strikeout in the game's first two innings.
With the confidence in the woman in the circle, Jordyn Wiatrak was eyeing a hot start to the bottom half of the second. Wiatrak delivered on a full count, smashing a double to right field. The prosperous inning was just getting starting for the Bears, who would compile nine runs on five hits, and after the merry-go-round on the base pads was over, left none on base.
Reddacliff trotted back out on to the rubber in the third inning, looking to solidify her fourth win of the year. She would let one slip through after an error from Alex Sonoqui, but the eight run advantage remained intact, and the run was inevitably unearned.
A quiet bottom half of the third brought another opportunity for New Mexico to chip away at the UNC lead. The Lobos led off the inning with a quick single and a double to reduce their deficit to seven, but from there the Bears' defense dug their heels in, preventing any further runs from crossing the plate.
Northern Colorado took advantage of an error in the top of the fourth inning, scoring another run on an RBI form Lauren Paige. With the bases loaded, Adeline Coldiron provided a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring UNC's second run of the inning and extending the lead to 11-2.
All the Bears needed was three outs in the top of the fifth inning, and they would claim their fifth win of the year.
After a groundout, single and a flyout, Reddacliff and the Bears were a mere three strikes away from victory. However, the pesky Lobos were able to combine for another three hits to keep the inning and the game alive, momentarily.
On a 1-0 pitch, Reddacliff forced Casados to fly out to Emily Holtz in left field, ending the contest at 11-3 in just five innings.
GAME 2
Head coach Shana Easley pegged Valerie Vidal for the start in the second game Saturday afternoon and Vidaly, like Reddacliff, came out spinning it. Vidal needed only 11 pitches to retire the Lobo top of the order.
After stranding Erica Dick on second base, Vidal and the defense faced a difficult middle of the order for New Mexico. Six hits highlighted a six-run inning for the Lobos, and much like the Bears had done in game one, took a commanding lead early.
Again, the Bears threatened with two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second inning. However, the threat was thwarted for a second time in the afternoon affair when Emily Holtz struck out looking to leave Sonoqui and Coldiron stranded.
Chandler Elsner, who came in to pitch for Vidal in the second inning, breezed through the top of the third, allowing her defense to do the talking. Elsner's 1-2-3 innings brought her offense back to the plate promptly looking for a run or two.
Two quick outs made the bottom half of the frame look bleak for the Bears. Rachel Johnson had different plans. With the count at 2-2, Johnson blasted a home run over the left field fence, scoring UNC's first run with her solo shot.
Johnson's homer, left New Mexico with a sour taste in the mouths and quickly countered to make up for the run lost. Three more UNM runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning, widening the gap to 9-1.
Lauren Paige led off the bottom half with a double, but for a third time in the game, was stuck in scoring position after three consecutive outs from subsequent UNC batters. Northern Colorado only left four batters on base in the game, but all four were in scoring position.
The fifth inning spelled more trouble for Northern Colorado. Already down eight, three more runs extended New Mexico's lead to double digits. Ultimately, a quick bottom of the fifth clinched a win for the Lobos, 12-1, splitting the day's action.
KEY STAT
Runners left on base – UNC left only seven runners on the bases, compared to New Mexico's eight.
MOST VALUABLE BEAR
Rachel Johnson – Johnson went 3-5 (.600) with a home run, a double and three RBI. Johnson also had 12 putouts and three assists for a 1.000 fielding percentage at first base.
IN THEIR WORDS
Shana Easley, Head Coach
"It was a wild two games, but in game one, I was really happy with the way we responded on offense after a slow first inning. We barreled up a lot of pitches and were able to string hits together over multiple innings. We also did a nice job on defense, continuing to compete to get outs, play our game, and not be satisfied with having a lead of several runs."
"Game two I was disappointed with how we responded after such a decisive win. That being said, I am fully confident we can come out tomorrow and compete successfully for a chance to win the series."
NOTABLES
-Adeline Coldiron recorded an insane diving catch in the second of the day's games.
-Lauren Paige led the team with four RBI and six total bases on the afternoon.
-Jayme Reddacliff pitched her third complete game in a row.
-No Northern Colorado pitcher gave up a home run today.
