Hot Bats Not Enough For @BearsSoftball Against Sac State
4/8/2016 8:21:00 PM | Softball
Game 1:
SSU used three strong innings in the opener to its advantage, pushing across 10 runs in the third through fifth innings to win 11-7.
After the Hornets put up a four-spot in the top half of the second, UNC answered putting up three runs of its own in the team's next at bat.
The Bears worked a two out rally in the bottom of the second to put points on the board. Rachel Johnson worked a walk to get things going and then Kaley Garcia smoked a stand-up triple to push across UNC's first run of the game. Jordyn Wiatrak sent a shot to center for a two-run home run in the next at-bat to cut Northern Colorado's deficit to 4-3. The home run was the second on the season for the freshman.
Sac State plated six more runs over the next two innings to pad its lead to seven (10-3), while shutting down the UNC bats until the seventh inning.
The Hornets added one more run to its total in the seventh to make it a 11-3 ball game, but the Bears refused to call it a day, rallying on their final three outs of the game.
Both Johnson and Garcia singled to put runners on first and second and a Wiatrak walk loaded the bases for Adeline Coldiron.
Coldiron didn't disappoint, hitting a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and make it an 11-6 game.
Two batters later, Sarah Fitzherbert brought the fourth run of the inning in on a ground out to second, to bring it to 11-7. Unfortunately the rally died short as the team grounded out to end the game.
Kelli Kleis (0-9) got the starting nod for UNC. Kleis threw 3.2 innings giving up 10 runs on 11 hits and walked five.
The Bears got solid relief out of Lauren Paige who pitched the final 3.1 innings. Paige gave up just one run on four hits and walked one in the loss.
Game Changer:
Sacramento State used a four-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach for Northern Colorado. The Hornets batted around in the inning and loaded the bases two separate times. Their four runs came on five hits.
Key Stat:
Kaley Garcia had the best overall game at the plate in the defeat. Garcia was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. She singled and tripled in her day at the plate.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"Offensively we did pretty well. We put up seven runs against a good Sac State team that always has good pitching, so I was pleased to see us do that. We just have to be able to contain the runs on defense and make sure we're making the routine plays and catching balls that hit our glove. I felt like we beat ourselves in that first game and had some of those untimely errors on defense that led to runs for them."
Game 2:
The finale of the doubleheader was quite the opposite of the first game. UNC jumped out to an early lead, but was hurt by a big inning from SSU. The Bears took a 4-1 lead after the fourth, but the Hornets used a seven-run fifth inning to take game two 8-5.
Both teams posted a run in the first inning. Sarah Fitzherbert got Northern Colorado on the board with a double up the middle to tie the game up at 1-1.
A strong outing from Jayme Reddacliff (4-12) kept the Hornets off the board over the next three innings. She dealt 4.2 innings giving up 10 runs, but just two earned on 10 hits and struck out one.
UNC got on a roll in the fourth inning to take the lead 4-1. Both Rachel Johnson and Jordyn Wiatrak earned walks to put runners on and then a single to the right side by Adeline Coldiron loaded the bases with no outs.
The Bears got their first run of the inning after an error, and then Fitzherbert came through again for UNC with a two-RBI single to center.
Sacramento State answered and then some in the very next inning, posting seven runs on a two-out rally to steal the lead from Northern Colorado, 8-4.
An error by Erica Dick kept the inning alive for SSU and they used it to their advantage, plating three runs and hitting a three-run home run to center
UNC's last inning rally once again wasn't enough as they scored on a sac fly from Wiatrak, but again grounded out on the next at bat to end the game.
The Bears got excellent relief work in game two from Chandler Elsner. Elsner held Sac State to just one hit in 2.1 innings and struck out one.
Game Changer:
Northern Colorado had plenty opportunities to score runs in game two, but were shut down by strong pitching from SSU. In total, the Bears left nine runners on base in the three-run loss.
Key Stat:
Sarah Fitzherbert was solid at the two-hole for UNC in game two. She finished 2-4 with a single, a double and a strikeout with three RBI.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"I thought in both games we had great relief pitching and in game two Jayme [Reddacliff] did a good job for us, but again when it comes down to it we have to try to contain that big inning. We tried to pause and take some time to stop that momentum a little bit, but when push comes to shove we have to step up and make those plays and get those outs."
The softball team closes out the series against Sacramento State on Saturday, April 9 with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
