@BearsSoftball Falls in Series Finale to Sacramento State
4/9/2016 6:23:00 PM | Softball
The Bears dropped the series finale to the Hornets 4-1.
GREELEY, Colo. – Defense and pitching were the backbone for Northern Colorado (4-27, 0-9) in the series finale against Sacramento State (18-15, 8-1 Big Sky) on Saturday, unfortunately after combining for 12 runs in the first two games the Bears pushed across just one run in the 4-1 loss.
Game 3:
The first run of the game didn't come until the third inning due to strong pitching from both teams.
Despite the loss, Jayme Reddacliff (4-13) went 6.1 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits while walking four.
Reddacliff, behind a solid UNC defense, aided in stranding 13 Hornet runners on base throughout the seven innings.
On the flip side, Northern Colorado had multiple opportunities to push runs across stranding 10 on base.
Sac State plated the first run of the game in the top of the third on a seeing-eye single up the middle with one out. The Hornets had the bases loaded later in the inning, but Reddacliff got out of the jam and the inning on a ground out and pop out, giving up just the one run.
The Hornets extend the lead to 2-0 in the top of five, but UNC answered in the bottom of the inning with its first and ultimately only run the game.
Designated player, Lauren Paige smoked a shot off the center field wall bringing home Madi Schmidt for Paige's 15th RBI of the season.
SSU scored one run in each of the final two innings to eventually seal the game and the series sweep over the Bears.
Game Changer:
Despite giving up nine hits, Hornets pitcher, Celina Matthias held the Bears to just one run and struck out seven, going all seven innings in the circle.
Key Stat:
Northern Colorado stranded 10 on base in the three-run loss, the most the team has left on base all season.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"I thought our defense responded well and did what we needed them to do today and improved from yesterday. We pitched well enough to keep us in the ball game and were able to get people on base, but not the hit to bring them in when we had runners in scoring position and I think if we would have had just one or two of those hits it would have been a much different story. I think our relief pitching in this series was as good as it's been all year, which is vital part of our program. Seeing that was good and a step in the right direction. We once again were able to do a lot of good things, but still came up short executing with runners in scoring position."
