Dick Breaks Career Runs Record in Split with Portland State
4/22/2016 8:16:00 PM | Softball
Erica Dick surpassed the Division I career runs record set in 2010.
GREELEY, Colo. – Game one was more of the same Northern Colorado (7-31, 2-12 Big Sky) team that scored 19 runs in a victory earlier in the week, with a 10-4 win over Portland State (12-26, 6-8 Big Sky). That confidence at the plate seemed to shy away in game two as the Bears took the loss, 9-4 for a split of the doubleheader on Friday.
Game 1:
UNC scored in all but one inning in the 10-4 victory over Portland State. The team racked up 13 hits on 32 at bats (.406 avg.) for its first conference win at home.
The Vikings started off the game with a three-spot, which was PSU's only lead of the game. From there, Northern Colorado scored four runs over the first two innings to take the lead and keep it.
Designated player, Lauren Paige brought home the team's first run of the day with an RBI double to left center in the bottom of one.
With runners on second and third in the bottom of the second, third baseman, Jordyn Wiatrak grounded out to short, scoring catcher, Ari Samaniego to make it a 3-2 game in favor of PSU. The final two runs of the inning for UNC came via Portland State errors, giving them the lead, 4-3.
The Viks notched a single run in the top of the three to tie the game, but that would be their last run of the game. Pitcher Jayme Reddacliff (6-14) and the Bears defense shut Portland State down for the remaining four innings.
Reddacliff went the distance in the victory, pitching all seven innings giving up four runs on 10 hits, while striking out one and walking four.
While PSU was held scoreless for the remainder of the game, Northern Colorado was good for two runs in each of final three innings at the plate.
Shortstop Erica Dick hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-4 ball game. Dick's home run was the fourth of the season for the junior and she became the program's Division I career leader in runs in the process. Dick now has 119 runs to her name throughout her three seasons with the Bears, surpassing Jessie Schoepflin's mark of 115.
Dick tacked on her third and final RBI of the game in the very next inning with single up the middle. Dick finished the game one, 2-5 with three RBIs and three runs.
First baseman, Rachel Johnson, second baseman Sarah Fitzherbert and Wiatrak knocked in the last three runs of the game to seal the W for the team.
Game Changer:
After being tied at four, Erica Dick smacked a two-run home run down the left field line to put UNC back out in front 6-4.
Key Stat:
Sarah Fitzherbert had a strong game one. Fitzherbert went 3-4 with one RBI and continued her hit streak to 15 games. Her streak would later come to an end in game two, but still sits as the longest streak of the season for the team.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"It was great to see our offense do so well again. I think we were able to carry over from the game on Tuesday and have that mind set of expecting to get a hit every time we are at bat. We had a lot of people hitting up and down our lineup and were able to execute when we had runners in scoring position, which has been one of the things we've been focusing on in practice, so it was good to see that."
On Erica Dick Breaking the Career Runs Record:
"She's an incredible athlete and she's someone when I see go to the plate, I just expect she's going to get a hit every time. She's done tremendously well for us and I expect her to continue on what she's already done and I think she's going to break a few more records before she leaves here."
Game 2:
The Bears had quality at bats in game two, but couldn't push runners across in the 9-4 loss against the Vikings. The team worked eight walks and notched five hits, but couldn't capitalize with runners on, leaving nine on base.
Northern Colorado jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by catcher, Ari Samaniego. From there, the Bears were held scoreless over the next two innings.
Meanwhile, Portland State used a big third inning to bulk its lead over UNC. PSU was good for six runs on seven hits, batting around the lineup once to make it a 6-1 game.
Lauren Paige (0-3) who started in the circle was relieved in the middle of the third by Kelli Kleis. Paige threw 2.1 innings and gave up five runs on six hits, while fanning one.
Kleis was good for 2.2 innings before Chandler Elsner finished out the game. Kleis gave up two runs on five hits and also struck out one and walked one.
Elsner was the third and final pitcher for UNC. In her 2.0 innings in the circle she gave up two runs on three hits, recording a strike out and a walk.
Portland State added one more run in the top of the fourth, extending its lead to six runs before the Bears got back into a rhythm on offense in the bottom half of the frame.
Relief catcher Adeline Coldiron, who came in Samaniego, rocked an RBI double to center field, scoring center fielder, Kaley Garcia. Jordyn Wiatrak also tallied and RBI in the inning with a blooper up the middle that fell just in between the defense to push across Coldiron, cutting the team's deficit to four, 7-3.
UNC chipped away at the lead once again in the fifth with a ribby from Garcia. Garcia grounded out on the play, but scored shortstop Erica Dick who tripled to lead off the inning, putting the Bears down by just three, 7-4.
The Vikings sealed the game in the top of the sixth with two more runs to make it 9-4.
Game Changer:
Portland State recorded six runs in the the top of the third inning, a deficit that Northern Colorado could not surmount.
Key Stat:
Lauren Paige worked the count in game two. Paige went 0-1 in the loss, but earned three walks in her four appearances at the plate.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"I thought we were able to barrel up some good pitches and they (Portland State) made some great plays. Our offensive could have done better, but I think it came down to more of our defense – we have to be able to eliminate that big inning. That was what really got us in this game and proved to be the difference maker."
The series finale against PSU will take place on Saturday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m. The softball team will also be hosting Alumni Day at the game.
