4/23/2016 7:39:00 PM | Softball
The Bears picked up a 9-7 victory over the Vikings on Saturday to earn the team's first series win of the season.
Game 3:
The Bears plated seven runs in the first two innings of the game and never looked back in the two-run decision.
Portland State score two runs to open the game on a single up the middle, but it was short lived as Northern Colorado was good for a three-spot in the bottom half of the frame.
A triple each from center fielder Kaley Garcia, was the only RBI of the inning, Garcia came home after a PSU error and shortstop Erica Dick ran across home plate on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 in UNC's favor after one full inning.
Northern Colorado was back at it again in the bottom of the second, this time padding four runs to its lead. Another triple to right center, this time from Dick brought across right fielder Cheyenne Talmadge for the first RBI of the frame.
Following suit, second baseman Sarah Fitzherbert sent a scorcher down the right field line for the team's third triple of the game, scoring Dick in the process.
Left fielder Madi Schmidt kept the rally going with a single up the middle to plate Fitzherbert, and Schmidt came home on a single to short by Garcia.
Northern Colorado ended the second inning with a 7-2 advantage.
Portland State chipped away at the UNC lead with a run in the top of the third and then a four-spot in the top of the fifth, erasing the Bears' lead to just one, 8-7.
Northern Colorado was good for two more runs in the game. Before PSU's big inning, UNC got an RBI single from catcher Adeline Coldiron in the bottom of the fourth and a security run from pinch runner, Kelli Kleis who score on third baseman Jordyn Wiatrak's double to center in the sixth.
Jayme Reddacliff (7-14) closed the door on the Vikings in the top of the seventh to earn the complete game win.
Reddacliff allowed seven runs (five earned) on 15 hits, while striking out and walking one. She held PSU scoreless in four of the seven innings.
Game Changer:
The UNC bats were making noise in the series finale. Seven players throughout the lineup recorded at least two hits as the team went 14-33 (.424 avg.) at the plate.
Key Stat:
Erica Dick tallied her ninth triple of the season in the win. Dick officially leads all of the Big Sky and the NCAA in triples. The next closest batter in the conference has five and the next closest in the NCAA has eight.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"It's great to continue to see hits up and down the lineup and execute with runners in scoring position again this game. We got away from that last game, but did it well in the first game, so being able to carry that confidence of hitting over into our next series is going to be key. We're continuing to build on that confidence, we talk a lot about the mental side of the game, but being able to actually execute to get the win, or execute to get the hit pushes that confidence even higher and we are going to take that into next weekend and continue to get better."
The softball team will round out its eight-game home stand next weekend with a three-game series against Southern Utah.
