Bears Secure Series Over Weber State with Doubleheader Sweep on Friday Afternoon

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado softball powered its way to a Friday afternoon doubleheader sweep over Weber State at Gloria Rodriguez Field, using a pair of grand slams to rally for a 13–10 win in game one before dominating game two, 13–2 in five innings.
GAME ONE: NORTHERN COLORADO 13 WEBER STATE 10
Weber State struck first in the opening inning behind a solo home run from Abby Grundy, but the Bears quickly answered. Hayden Nelson tied the game with a solo shot in the second before KK Christie delivered an RBI triple to give Northern Colorado a 2-1 edge. In the third, Krista Francia added another solo home run to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Wildcats responded with a massive fourth inning, scoring eight runs on nine hits to take a 9-3 lead. Emma Bingham homered to spark the rally, while Abby Grundy highlighted the inning with a two-RBI single as Weber State seized control.
Northern Colorado answered in the bottom half of the inning. After loading the bases, Christie launched a grand slam to right-center to cut the deficit to 9-7. Moments later, with the bases loaded again, Nelson delivered another grand slam—her second home run of the game, to cap an eight-run inning and give the Bears an 11-9 lead.
The Bears continued to add on in the fifth. Krista Francia drove in a run with an RBI single, and Emma Harrington followed with a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 13-9.
Weber State added a run in the sixth on an RBI double from Mariyah Delgado, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would get. Grace Algrim came on in the seventh to shut the door and earn her fourth save of the season.
GAME TWO: NORTHERN COLORADO 13 WEBER STATE 2 (5)
Northern Colorado secured the series in dominant fashion, exploding for 11 runs in the fourth inning to secure a 13–2 run-rule victory over Weber State. The Bears finished with 13 runs on 12 hits, while Weber State managed two runs on six hits and committed three errors.
The Bears wasted no time getting on the board. Katie Walling set the tone in the first inning with a solo home run to center field, giving Northern Colorado an early 1–0 lead. They added another run in the second when KK Christie singled and later stole home.
Grace Algrim (6–6) kept Weber State in check, allowing just two runs on six hits over five innings while striking out three. Weber State threatened at times, including a double from Sadie Kirk in the third, but couldn't break through early.
The Wildcats got on the board in the fourth inning when Kiaira Smith delivered an RBI single to score Riley Whalen, cutting the deficit to 2–1.
The bottom of the fourth inning turned into a decisive outburst for the Bears. Northern Colorado sent 16 batters to the plate and piled up 11 runs on eight hits. KK Christie started the rally with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from Walling. Amailee Morales added another run with a single, and Ella Gonzales chipped in with an RBI double.
Baylie Kakallis drove in two with a single, and Kenzie Carter delivered the biggest blow of the inning, a three-run home run to center field that blew the game open. The Bears continued to capitalize on walks and errors, and Gonzales capped the inning with a two-run single to extend the lead to 13–1.
The Wildcats got a run back with a solo shot but was not enough as the Bears secured game two of the series.
ON DECK: Northern Colorado returns to the field tomorrow for the regular-season finale against Weber State, aiming to complete the series sweep. The game will also serve as Senior Day for the Bears. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. MDT.
