SACRAMENTO, Calif.—After changing venues from Colorado to California for this weekend's series, Northern Colorado and Sacramento State started their three game series Saturday with a double-header. The Bears fell to the Hornets in both games by the scores of 9-3 and 7-1.
Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Bryan Tibbitts (Westminster, Colo.) had five total hits combined with Park recording three and Tibbitts two. Park scored once and Tibbitts had one RBI.
The Bears offense did well in the first game getting eight hits, but struggled in the second game of the twin bill mustering three hits against the combination of Ty Nichols and Sam Long for Sac State.
In the first game Sacramento State jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four before the Bears scored their first run of the game in the fifth when Cole Maltese (Superior, Colo.) was driven home by a Tibbitts double down the right filed line. Maltese reached base to start the inning with a single through the left side.
The Hornets would add on two more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 7-1 going to the bottom half of the inning when UNC would add on its second run of the game. Park singled up the middle, and then stole second. Brandon Vaughn (Louisville, Colo.) would single through the middle to bring home Park.
UNC would score its final run of the first game in the seventh. Tibbitts would record his second hit of the game singling through the right side. He would proceed to steal second and advance to third on a Dan Reese (Casper, Wyo.) ground out. Jake Garcia would earn his lone RBI of the day when he singled to center to drive in Tibbitts.
Sac State would add on two insurance runs in the ninth to put away UNC 9-3 in game one.
