WACO, Texas — Northern Colorado senior Tony Castonguay has been named one of three finalists for the inaugural Tony Gwynn Trophy, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Wednesday. The award honors NCAA baseball student-athletes who exemplify the legacy of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn through their community involvement, academic and athletic excellence, and integrity.
Castonguay, a catcher and outfielder for the Bears, is recognized alongside Kansas infielder Michael Brooks and LSU outfielder Chris Stanfield as the first-ever finalists for the prestigious honor.
"Tony Castonguay is everything you want in a student-athlete—resilient, selfless, and committed to making a difference on and off the field," said Northern Colorado head coach Mike Anderson. "His journey, both in life and in baseball, is a testament to his strength of character and unwavering dedication to others. To see him recognized as a finalist for an award that honors the legacy of Tony Gwynn is incredibly meaningful and well-deserved. Tony represents our program and university with the highest level of integrity, and we couldn't be more proud of him."
In his first season with Northern Colorado, Castonguay has appeared in 44 games with 35 starts, tallying 11 doubles, three home runs and 32 RBIs. He previously competed at UNC Asheville and Kansas, and currently holds a 3.84 GPA while majoring in natural health and sciences.
Off the field, Castonguay's impact has been equally significant. He founded and operates his own nonprofit, WeAreOneMovement, which raises scholarships for students with special needs. His commitment to service also includes volunteering with The Arc of Northeast Colorado and coaching their unified basketball team—even after suffering a devastating hit-and-run injury in Tennessee. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and a long rehabilitation process, Castonguay continued volunteering from a wheelchair and later on crutches, before returning to the field.
The Tony Gwynn Trophy, introduced for the 2025 season, celebrates student-athletes who go beyond statistics—those who demonstrate a genuine commitment to their communities and serve as role models in college baseball. The winner will be selected by a vote of NCBWA board members, select college coaches, and national media.
The award carries forward the philanthropic legacy of Tony Gwynn, who was not only a 15-time MLB All-Star and eight-time batting champion but also a tireless advocate for youth and community organizations throughout his life.
The recipient of the inaugural Tony Gwynn Trophy will be announced later this month.
