Alex Werbach went 6 1/3 innings strong in a 10-0 loss
PHOENIX-- Junior right handed pitcher Alex Werbach (Brighton, Colo.) went 6 1/3 innings strong Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough for Northern Colorado to secure the win. The Bears fell 10-0 in eight innings to Grand Canyon.Â
Werbach posted a line of nine hits and five runs while striking out two in his time on the mound.Â
"Alex Werbach came out and gave us a chance to win the game today," head coach Carl Iwasaki said. "We were unable to produce any offense to support him unfortunately."Â
UNC's offense struggled on the day mustering just four hits. Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii) gathered half of the team's hits going 2-for-3 to raise his batting average to .385 on the year.Â
GCU got on the board in the second inning scoring three runs on four hits. Werbach was able to get the 'Lopes to strand two though, limiting the damage.Â
Grand Canyon added another two runs, one apiece in the sixth and seventh before their big eighth inning.Â
The 'Lopes plated five runs in the inning to end the game. Northern Colorado yielded six hits in the inning to Grand Canyon including back-to-back singles to end the game.Â
"It is disappointing to drop the series," Iwasaki said, "but we still have an opportunity to take a game from them and that is what we will look to do tomorrow."
UNC will look to grab a game from GCU tomorrow with the finale's first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
