UNC dropped game one of the doubleheader against North Dakota State and had the second game suspended due to darkness
GREELEY, Colo—Northern Colorado and North Dakota State were scheduled to play 16 innings of baseball today, but were only able to complete 14 and a half of them.
The Bears and Bison had a seven, then nine inning doubleheader scheduled Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field, but only finished one of the games. NDSU won the first game 4-2, while the second was halted due to darkness after seven and half innings with NDSU leading 12-11.
The completion of the second game will start at Noon Sunday with the Bears up to bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sunday's regularly scheduled game will then start 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
Northern Colorado and North Dakota State cleaned up its defense from the opening game of the series with just one error in Saturday's first game. The Bison would use a complete game from Parker Trewin to earn the 4-2 win evening up the series.
Both teams were quiet offensively through the first four innings, with NDSU being the only team to score one run during that time.
The sixth inning saw four of the six runs for the game scored in it. North Dakota State started the scoring with a lead-off home run from first baseman Mason Pierzchaiski, and followed it up taking advantage of Allen Cook's lone walk for the game.
Going into the bottom of the sixth down 3-0 the Bears were able to mount a rally.
Leadoff hitter Ryan Yamane (Manoa, Hawaii) singled to right center to get it going. After consecutive outs, first baseman Brandon Vaughn (Louisville, Colo.) stepped to the plate and delivered a big hit. Vaughn drove in Yamane and himself with a two run home run to left field cutting the North Dakota State lead to one.
NDSU would then go on to add an insurance run in the seventh, and sit the Bears down in order in the bottom half to even up the four game series.
"Trewin threw a good game and held us at bay," head coach Carl Iwasaki said. "You have to get it going early in a seven inning game and we just didn't do that."
The second game of the doubleheader saw much more offense than the first game did through the seven and a half innings that were finished today.
UNC got the scoring going right away with two runs in the first inning.
NDSU would put up a four spot in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead, but the Bears would come right back in the bottom of the inning.
The middle of the order got things going for the Bears. Vaughn got hit by a pitch to start the inning then UNC strung together three straight hits to tie the game up and chase
the Bison's starting pitcher after just two and a third innings.
In the middle innings UNC outscored NDSU 3-2 to take a 7-6 lead into the seventh inning. The Bears would score four runs in the seventh
Northern Colorado's big inning was started the same way as the third, this time Justin Mulvaney (Arvada, Colo.), getting hit by a pitch. He would then be sacrificed over to
second base, when the top of the Bears order came up.
Yamane would drive in Mulvaney to increase the score to 8-6. After a fly out Reyn Sugai (Honolulu, Hawaii) came in to pitch hit drawing a walk. Vaughn and Payton Tapia (Fort Collins, Colo.) would help UNC get two runs with two outs to lead 11-6 going to the top of the eighth.
NDSU put together a huge eighth inning. The leadoff hitter Taylor Sanders singled and then advanced to third after a passed ball and wild pitch. UNC would walk the next three batters trimming its lead to 11-7.
After getting two outs with the bases loaded, including a sacrifice fly the Bears looked to be in good shape when pitch hitter Juan Gamez stepped to the plate. Gamez got into a low pitch driving it to left center field giving NDSU a 12-11 lead.
After UNC recorded the last out of the inning on a strike out, both coaches and the umpires met at home plate deciding to halt the game at its current spot and coming back tomorrow to finish.
When play continues tomorrow it with be the bottom of the eighth inning with Mulvaney leading off for UNC and Trevor Jaunich on the mound for NDSU.
"We hit some adversity in that eighth inning and gave up the six spot," said Iwasaki. "The good thing is we get to regroup and come back tomorrow to finish the game."Â
