Two early errors and three overall hurt UNC baseball against North Dakota Saturday afternoon
"We gave up three big innings today and didn't run reduce," head coach Carl Iwasaki said. "We kept on fighting though which is good to see out of such a young team."
North Dakota had two three run innings, and a four run inning.
Early errors proved to be costly for the Bears, giving up four unearned runs on three errors.
"Errors will hurt you and they did us today," Iwasaki said. "They are a part of the game, but we can't be making two or three every game."
North Dakota got the scoring going when a Jacob Ek (Columbus, Neb.) error while trying to turn a double play allowed the runner from third to score. In the next at bat Jeff Campbell hit a two-run home run to left center field, making it 3-0 in favor of UND.
In the bottom of the third, UNC responded. Dan Reese (Casper, Wyo.) got the rally started with a single up the middle. Reyn Sugai (Honolulu, Hawaii) was then hit by a pitch and Justin Mulvaney (Arvada, Colo.) pulled a ball down the left field scoring two. Brandon Vaughn followed by getting a seeing eye single through the right side to score Mulvaney.
Sugai continued his hot streak this week going 2-4 with an RBI and run.
"Reyn Sugai has been playing out of his mind right now and has been a catalyst for us," Iwasaki said.
UND came back and responded in a big way in the fourth.
It started with a Brett Harrison home run to left center. Following the home run, UND had three straight singles to score another run. With the bases loaded following an out and intentional walk. North Dakota capped off the four run inning with a blooper single to center to make its lead 7-3.
"We have to learn to not give up runs after we get some runs and get back in the game," said Iwasaki.
UNC continued to try and fight its way back, pushing two more runs across in the sixth. Nick Tanner (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) doubled to start the inning and was brought in by a Reese single. Reese proceeded to score on a Sugai single ripped to center.
Reese also had a solid game for the Bears going 2-4 with an RBI and two runs.
North Dakota put the game away in the seventh inning when they scored three runs on five hits.
UNC and UND will face each other in the series finally at noon tomorrow afternoon.
