GREELEY, Colo. - The Northern Colorado women's soccer team played a very aggressive Wyoming team in the Front Range Derby on Friday night. It was a long night for UNC as the game started out with a 55 minute lightening delay. The Bears finished the match with nine shots, four on-goal in the, 0-0 draw.
"This was a very hard fought match," said head coach Tim Barrera. "Both teams came out and competed at an extremely high level. We had a lot of good looks, but couldn't come up with a goal."
The Cowgirls came out on the attack to start the match. Within in the first twelve minutes of the first half, Wyoming registered five shots and one corner kick. The Cowgirls were led by red-shirt freshman, Candace Sciberras with three shots on-goal in the first 45 minutes.
The Bears countered the high-pressured Cowgirl offense when sophomore forward Essence-Ortiz-Laneir put a great shot on goal leading to the first UNC corner of the game in the 8th minute of the half. Both teams battled back-and-forth, but neither team gained an edge.
Wyoming and UNC were deadlocked at, 0-0 heading into the locker rooms.
Entering the second half the Cowgirls continued to pressure the Bears' defense. UNC didn't waiver and sophomore goalkeeper, Kaitlin Ruff made two huge saves to keep Northern Colorado in contention. Junior forward Rebecca Lancia, continued to have the hot foot for the Bears in the second half, getting off two shots on-goal, but neither of them finding the back of the net. In the final minute of the second half, UNC earned back-to-back corner kicks, but were unable to produce the game-winning goal.
Entering overtime, The Bears had a great opportunity to put the game away. Laneir fired the ball at the goal off a corner kick, but Wyoming keeper Alex Boehm came up with the diving save. The Bears wouldn't stop there. In the final minute of the first overtime, midfielder Jacqui Pulley rocketed the ball from just outside the 18-yard box, but again Boehm made the stop.
In the final overtime, Ruff came up big again, a great save to keep things knotted at, 0-0. UNC pushed the ball into Wyoming territory for one last chance at the game-winner. Freshman forward, Brooke Braden took a crack at the goal, but the shot missed just left.
The match would end in a stalemate, 0-0.
UNC recorded eight corner kicks on the night, the most in a game on the season. Ruff would also hit a season high with nine saves, giving her a total of 41 on the year.
"I'm really proud of the way our team dug in and fought for the entire 110 minutes," Barrera said. "It really shows how much we've grown on both sides of the ball throughout the season."
The Bears will finish up their home stand this Sunday against Bryant University. Kick off at Jackson Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.Â
