Greeley, COLO. - The Northern Colorado women's soccer team rebounded on Sunday in a big way from their Friday loss against Big 12 opponent, Iowa State. The Bears routed the Mavericks from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, 4-1, scoring three second half goals in the win.
"I was proud of the girls for regrouping today after they scored their goal," head coach Tim Barrera said. "The key point in the game came when Kaitlin [Ruff] came up with a big save after their first goal and we continued to chip away and scored some really nice goals."Â
The Bears came out on the attack, getting off four shots in the first 17 minutes of play. Essence Ortiz-Laneir presented a problem for the Mavericks. Laneir got off two shots on-goal in the first five minutes and nearly put one away, just missing high.
The Bears struck first in the 20th minute of the match when Ortiz-Laneir fed senior forward, Juliana Grover a great ball into the Maverick's defense. Grover would beat the keeper one-on-one, netting her third goal of the season.
Nebraska-Omaha responded with pressure of their own in the 35th minute of the first half, but sophomore goalkeeper, Kaitlin Ruff came up with a huge stop for the Bears, blocking would have been a guaranteed goal from UNO's Marquette Pick. Ruff finished the match with six saves and one goal allowed.
"My confidence is really high when our defense works very well together and you saw that today when we really pulled together when the pressure was on," said Ruff. "We are growing every game as a unit and it will help us moving forward from here."
Northern Colorado would finish the half on top, 1-0.
Entering the second half, UNO started off extremely aggressive, scoring three minutes after the whistle blew. Mavericks' forward, Chelsi Rohloff scored in the 48th minute off a through-ball from midfielder, Layla Ashouri, for UNO's only goal of the game.
The Bears regrouped, earning themselves a corner kick in 61st minute of the second half that led to junior midfielder, Paige Morris putting her second goal of the season into the back of the net off the assist from junior midfielder, Kassy Castillo, putting UNC back on top, 2-1.
The Bears didn't stop there. Junior midfielder Rebecca Lancia scored just five minutes later off the assist from Adrienne Jordan. Lancia would strike again in the 88th minute, after receiving the ball off a free kick. Lancia dribbled her way into an opening between three defenders and drilled it past the keeper for her second goal of the day, sealing the win for UNC, 4-1.
"When you have teammates who really play well together, it makes things easy," said Lancia. "It was nice scoring four goals as a team today because it gives us confidence to score later in the year."
The women's soccer team still has two games left at Jackson Stadium as a part their five-game home stand. Next Friday, Sept. 19 the Bears will kick off against the University of Wyoming at 7:00 p.m. Â
