Boulder, Colo. – In the second game of the Colorado Cup and the season, the Bears were edged out by Colorado, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, despite another solid performance from junior goalkeeper, Kaitlin Ruff who racked up seven saves in the loss.
"I thought it was a good team effort. We had two shots hit off the crossbar in the game, but couldn't get one to fall and sometimes that's just how the game goes," said head coach Tim Barrera. "Obviously it wasn't the result we wanted, but overall I'm proud of the effort we gave today."
The Buffaloes offensively pressured UNC for the majority of the first half, getting off seven shots, compared to the Bears' two.
Midway through the half, sophomore forward, Shanlie Anderson found an opening in the defense and fired a shot at goal, but CU goalkeeper, Kate Scheel came up with the stop. Colorado took control over the next fifteen minutes cracking off four shots on goal, all saved by Ruff.
With less than five minutes to play in the half, UNC connected a string of solid passes and the ball landed in front of freshman forward, Brooke Braden who took a shot from inside the 18-yd box. The ball looked destined to go in, but hit off the crossbar and went out.
Both teams were deadlocked at 0-0, heading into the locker room.
"We knew it was going to be a long, tough game. We played 19 players in the first half," said Barrera. "Going to the bench early and often gave our players a breather, which really opened things up and provided us with a little more energy in the second half."
The Bears came out in the second half and looked like a completely different team. Just six minutes in, sophomore midfielder Kassy Castillo had an opportunity to give the Bears their first lead of the game, but CU goalkeeper Scheel again came up with the save.
It wasn't until the 61st minute when the game changed for the Bears. The Buffaloes, Kahlia Hogg took a corner kick and placed it inside the 6-yd box. Ruff went up and got a hand on the ball, but was unable to punch it out of bounds. The ball deflected off the crossbar and landed in front of CU's, Darcy Jernan who finished, giving Colorado the 1-0 lead.
The Bears were able to produce two more shots in the next twenty minutes of play, senior defender Adrienne Jordan had a solid shot on goal in the 79th minute and Sydney Schroeder had an opportunity in the 83rd minute that went just wide.
With time winding down, UNC attacked looking for an equalizer. Junior forward, Essence Ortiz-Lanier took space and found herself in scoring position. She took the shot, but again the ball hit the crossbar and was scooped up by CU's Scheel.
"Losing 1-0 to a Sweet Sixteen team from last year is pretty good result from a growth stand-point," said Barrera. "With every match we play, especially being such a young team, we will need to have that same kind of effort as we did today."
The Bears (1-1) will look to recover against Colorado State University (0-1) Thursday, August 28 at 4:00 p.m., as the Colorado Cup continues in Fort Collins.
