FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Northern Colorado women's soccer dropped a close contest with the Colorado State Rams by a margin of, 1-0 on Thursday afternoon. The loss puts head coach Tim Barrera's club at 1-2-0 on the year.
After 86 minutes of scoreless play, CSU forward Janelle Stone crossed the ball from the midfield to Gianna Bertana who snuck it past sophomore goalkeeper, Kaitlin Ruff to give the Rams the 1-0 lead and eventually the match.
"It was back and forth all game and looked like we were heading to overtime," said Barrera. "We got caught and they were able to transition in behind us and score the goal."
The first half of the game was evenly matched with the Bears getting off four shots and holding CSU to just three.
Junior forward, Essence Ortiz-Laneir and senior forward Juliana Grover got things rolling for UNC early with back-to-back shots on goal in the 15th minute of the half, but the Rams' Jesse McGinley came up with the save on each attempt. The Bears would go nearly 25 minutes before they got another crack at McGinley. Again it was Ortiz-Laneir with the shot, but McGinley was able to come up with the save to keep things even.
With 8:51 remaining in the half, the Rams' Maddie Rodriguez got past the Bears defense and had a clear path to the goal, but junior defender Madeline Chase came out of nowhere and made a sliding tackle to clear the ball away from Rodriguez.
The teams would head into the locker room knotted at, 0-0.
"I think after our big opening weekend we came out in kind of a lull," said Barrera. "Being such a young team, it all comes down to being able to focus and execute our game plan, which we did at times, but not for the full 90 minutes."
Freshman forward Brooke Braden looked to give the Bears the lead just two minutes into the second half with a well-placed shot on goal, but again McGinley was able to make the stop for the Rams.
UNC had two more solid looks at the goal off of corner kicks in the half, but neither shot was able to fall for the Bears.
Sophomore midfielder, Kassy Castillo led the team in shots on the day with two. Ruff recorded five saves for UNC in the loss.
The Bears will look to turn it around this Sunday, Aug. 31 as they return to Jackson Stadium to take on North Dakota State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
